Miss hoopeston finalests Abigail Foster, Miss Hoopeston 2012, prepares to crown her successor, Jacy Samet, Saturday at Hoopeston Area High School Auditorium. Also pictured are, from left, Callie Huffman, Miss Hoopeston 2009, and Meagan Cade and Erika Samet, contestants for this year’s crown.

Saturday was a good day for the Samet family as one member was named Miss Hoopeston and another, first runner-up.

Jacy Samet, 19, daughter of Ken Samet and Ginger Gonzalez, will wear the Miss Hoopeston crown this year. She beat out three other contestants for the title.

Her cousin, Erika, 18, daughter of Greg and Tina Samet, was named first runner-up.

Other contestants were Meagan Cade, 18, daughter of Rickie and Angie Cade, and Brooke Kinney, 18, daughter of Allen and Lisa Kinney.

This year’s search for Miss Hoopeston had more public input than previously. In years past, Hoopeston Jaycees selected girls to compete. This year, along with Jaycee input, girls could be nominated or nominate themselves.

Also, before Saturday’s crowning, residents were able to hear each girl give a one-minute speech at Hoopeston Area High School auditorium.

Judges for the event, including Darrin Brewster, 2013 National Sweetcorn Festival chairman; Brad Hardcastle, Hoopeston Jaycees board chairman; Michelle Crabtree and Chris Schroeder, National Sweetheart Pageant officials; and Valarie Paulson, Hoopeston Chamber of Commerce president, tallied scores from the speeches with scored from earlier interviews to select the winner.

While waiting for the final results, outgoing Miss Hoopeston Abigail Foster gave a tearful farewell speech, telling contestants that whomever won would “have the time of your life.”
