Here’s your WHPO Sports Update….

College Basketball…

Syracuse is still tops in The Associated Press Top 25, but it is no longer a unanimous No. 1.
The Orange (25-0), who won two games in the final seconds last week, are on top for a third straight week.  Florida (23-2), which won at Kentucky on Saturday, moved from third to second and received the one first-place vote.  Wichita State (27-0), the only other unbeaten Division I team, moved from fourth to third while Arizona, which lost to Arizona State on Friday, dropped from second to fourth.  Duke moved from eighth to fifth and was followed by San Diego State, Cincinnati, Kansas, Villanova and Saint Louis.

NASCAR…

Sprint Cup rookie Austin Dillon put his No. 3 car—the number made famous by the late Dale Earnhardt—on the pole for next Sunday’s Daytona 500.  He took the top spot with a lap just over 196 mph in NASCAR’s season opener - in a car owner Richard Childress has refused to field at NASCAR’s top level since Earnhardt’s fatal accident on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona race.  Earnhardt won 67 races, six championships and the 1998 Daytona 500 driving the No. 3.

Olympics…

the USA jumped to a tie for 1st in the overall medal count – thanks in part to their first-ever gold in ice dancing and a bronze in the 2-man bobsled.  And the US womens hockey team will get a rematch with rival Canada in Saturday’s gold-medal game.

Soccer….

Congratulations to Hoopeston Area’s Brennan Crose – who signed a national letter of intent to continue his soccer career at Parkland College this fall.  Crose was the 2013 Commercial News Soccer Player of the Year
