Here’s Your WHPO Sports Update…...

NCAA Men’s Basketball….
Tyler Griffey made an uncontested layup at the buzzer off a baseline inbounds pass and Illinois beat No. 1 Indiana 74-72 on Thursday night, the fifth straight week the nation’s top-ranked team has lost.
The Illini trailed 41-29 at halftime and by double digits for most of the second half before closing the game on a 13-2 run over the final 3:36.  DJ Richardson lead the Illini with 23 points. 

#4 Duke beat NC State 98 – 85
#6 Gonzaga beat Pepperdine 82 – 56
#19 Oregon lost to Colorado 48 – 47
#21 Missouri lost to Texas A & M 70 - 68

NBA…

Celtics 116 – Lakers 95

Denver Nuggets routed the Chicago Bulls 128 - 96

NHL…

Chicago Blackhawks beat the Phoenix Coyotes 6 – 2. 


High School Basketball….

Girls Regionals:

Schlarman Academy are Regional Champions after they beat Armstrong-Potomac 45 – 38 last night.  Schlarman upset the #1 and #2 seeds in rout to the Championship.  They take on Iroquois West in the Fisher Sectional on Monday night.

Watseka beat Beecher 45 – 27 to win the Hoopeston 2A Regional Championship.  The Lady Warriors will take on St. Joe in the Clifton Central Sectional on Monday.

 


Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers competed at the 35th annual WYSE
Academic Challenge, held at Danville Area Community College. 
The 13 students, coached by Mr. Adam Elliott, competed in 7 subjects, including
Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Computer Science, and
Engineering Graphics.  The team consisted of Will Samet, Mason Jett, Caity
Bekkering, Michelle Seat, David Cohen, Theresa Samet, Jordan McFadden,
Olivia Smith, Andrew Samet, Jacinda Nunez, Alyssa Graveline, Cassidy Dixon,
and Chelsea Gossett.  The team placed 3rd in their division.  Individual results:

Will Samet - 1st place, Eng. Graphics - 3rd place, Comp. Sci.
Chelsea Gossett - 2nd place, Math
Cassidy Dixon - 3rd place, Math
Alyssa Graveline - 3rd place, Math
Olivia Smith - 3rd place, English
Mason Jett - 3rd place, Biology

two students, Will Samet and Chelsea Gossett, move on to the Sectional competition held at Eastern Illinois University on March 7th.
