Here’s Your WHPO Sports Update…...

NASCAR…

David Ragan won at Talladega….a race that took over 7 hours to complete, thanks to a 3 ½ hour rain delay and a crash that sent Kurt Busch’s car airborne on top of Ryan Newman’s.  Newman escaped injury, but had choice words for NASCAR regarding restrictor plates, and also how race yesterday was continued to near dark.

NBA…

From Saturday:

The Bulls rebounded from illness, injury and the continued absence of Derrick Rose to beat Brooklyn in game 7 of their 1st round series.  Chicago advances to the 2nd round to take on the top seeded Miami Heat. 

from yesterday:

The Pacers beat the Knicks 102 – 95 in game one of their 2nd round series

OKC got by Memphis 95 – 93 in that game 1

other NBA news:

LaBron James became the youngest player in NBA history to win four MVPs after receiving 120 of 121 first-place votes by league media members and analysts on Saturday.

and PJ Carlesimo is out as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.


MLB…

The Cardinals pounded the Brewers 10 – 1 to complete a 4-game series sweep.

The Cubs lost to the Reds at Wrigley 7 – 4

The White Sox lost to the Royals 6 – 5 in 10 innings.


NHL…

The Minnesota Wild beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3 – 2 Sunday.  The Hawks lead that series 2 games to 1


Kentucky Derby…

5-1 favorite Orb won the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon. 

College Basketball…

Darius Paul, younger brother of graduating Illini MVP Brandon Paul, announced yesterday he was transferring to Illinois from Western Michigan.  The younger Paul was the Mid-American conference freshman of the year, averaging 10.4 points 5.7 rebounds per game.  Paul will sit out the 2013-14 season but will have 3 seasons of eligibility remaining.

Local Sports…

Softball:

After losing the first game 5 - 1, the Cornjerkers rebounded with 14 hits to get victory against the Watseka Warriors 15 – 4 on Saturday.

Brittney Myers had three hits and four RBIs in the second game for Hoopeston Area, while Aaliyah Colunga and Jhance Marshall had two hits and three RBIs, Rylee Martin had three RBIs and Jordan McFadden added one RBI.

The Cornjerkers are 8-15 and will return to Vermilion Valley Conference action today against Salt Fork.

from Friday-

Bismarck Henning beat Salt Fork 12 – 10.  Lexi Ballard had 3 RBIs for the Lady Blue Devils.

Baseball:

on Saturday-

PBL and Watseka spilt a doubleheader, with the Panthers winning the first game 2 – 1, with the Warriors taking the 2nd game 13 - 6

Oakwood blanked A-P 8 – 0

Salt Fork 4 – Bismarck Henning 1

GRF/C took both games of a double header with Hoopeston, 4 – 3 and 3 – 0

Hoopeston Area’s Maddie Brown is the Vermilion County champion in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Announcement:

University of Illinois-Springfield head men’s basketball coach Ben Wierzba will host a 1-day shooting clinic here in Hoopeston on June 1.  Basketball players in grades 6-12 can receive 2 sessions of direct shooting instruction from Coach Wierzba and his staff.  Sessions are 10am-Noon and 1-3pm on June 1 at Hoopeston Area H.S.  Fee is $35 and includes a t-shirt.  Registration forms can picked up at the high school and middle school offices
