Here’s Your WHPO Summer Sports Minute

NBA….

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected UNLV freshman Anthony Bennett as the surprise #1 pick in last night NBA draft.  Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel – initially projected to be the #1 pick dropped to the #6 pick by New Orleans, only to be traded to Philadelphia.  The Indiana Hoosiers had 2 top 5 picks – Victor Oladipo at #2 by Orlando and Cody Zeller at #4 by Charlotte.  The Chicago Bulls selected New Mexico small forward Tony Snell.  The Pacers 1st round pick was Arizona’s Solomon Hill.

the bigger NBA news was the blockbuster trade between the Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets.  Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry all go to the Nets, while Boston gets three first-round picks (2014, ‘16 and ‘18) along with 5 other players or their expiring contracts.

MLB….

the Cubs beat the Brewers 7 – 2

the Cardinals and White Sox had the day off

Soccer…

World Cup holder Spain beat Italy 7-6 in a shootout Thursday after extra time ended 0-0, setting up a showdown with host Brazil in the Confederations Cup final.

Local….

if you grew up in Hoopeston you’ll remember the annual Frank Longfellow little league baseball tournament – which starts tonight at 6pm with both minor league 10-and-under and major league 12-and-under games.  The tournament is a wooden-bat event and runs through the weekend at the Vermilion Iron fields on north 6th Ave.  Have a hot dog and see some of this area’s best young baseball talent right here in Hoopeston.
