Here’s Your WHPO Summer Sports Minute….

Alabama is No. 1 in the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll.
The Crimson Tide was an overwhelming choice, receiving 58 of 62 first-place votes. Ohio State was second and received three first-place votes. Oregon is No. 3, Stanford is 4, Georgia is five and No. 6 Texas A&M received the other first-place vote.
Half the top 10 is from the SEC, which has won the last seven national championships, including three in the last four years by Alabama.
former Chicago Bear and Dallas Cowboy Dennis McKinnon will make a special appearance in Hoopeston on Monday, Aug. 5 at the Hoopeston Hornet youth football field on S. 6th Ave. McKinnon is visiting Hoopeston to help the Hornet youth football program raise funds. He will offer photos and autographs as part of the fundraiser. The Hornets will have an obstacle course, food, and other fun events from 4-8pm on the 5th as part of McKinnon’s visit.
In his eight seasons, McKinnon caught 194 passes for 3,012 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also returned 129 punts for 1,191 yards and three touchdowns, and scored a rushing touchdown. He caught 31 passes for 555 yards and seven touchdowns during the Bears’ championship season in 1985. His best season was in 1988, when he caught 45 passes for 704 yards and three touchdowns, while also returning 40 punts for 405 yards and a franchise record two touchdowns (this record was later surpassed by Devin Hester in the 2006 season). At the time of his retirement, McKinnon’s 1,191 punt return yards were the second highest total in Chicago franchise history.
