Here’s Your WHPO Summer Sports Minute….
Major League Baseball came down heavy Monday on the players it found to have been involved with the South Florida anti-aging clinic Biogenesis, suspending Alex Rodriguez through the end of the 2014 season and banning 12 others for 50 games, including three All-Stars: Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers, Everth Cabrera of the San Diego Padres and Jhonny Peralta of the Detroit Tigers.
Rodriguez is appealing his suspension, while all the other players have accepted the punishment and admitted using PEDs in some why.
MLB commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement that Rodriguez’s punishment will begin Thursday and cover the rest of the 2013 regular season, the 2013 postseason and the 2014 regular season, was covered under the drug program’s protocols and based on Rodriguez’s “use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including testosterone and human growth hormone, over the course of multiple years.”
Rodriguez returned to the Yankees line-up last night in Chicago after a minor league rehab stint, to see the White Sox snap a 10-game losing streak with an 8-1 win over struggling New York.
the Cubs and Cardinals had the day off.
Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart will miss this weekend’s road course race at Watkins Glen after breaking his right leg in a sprint car race Monday night at Southern Iowa Speedway.
