Woman who tripped on sidewalk suing City of Paxton

According to the Paxton Record, A Paxton woman who tripped on a piece of strap material that was frozen to a public sidewalk is suing the city, along with the contractors who left the material on the sidewalk while renovating a downtown building last winter.

Christine Crosby and her husband, Allen, filed an eight-count lawsuit on Dec. 15 in Ford County Circuit Court, seeking in excess of $50,000 in damages for each count.

Named as defendants are the City of Paxton, Scaggs Properties LLC, Bickers Construction Inc. of Champaign and contractor Eric Lyons.

Christine Crosby claimed in the lawsuit that she has sustained “significant injuries,” for which she continues to receive medical treatment, as a result of the defendants’ negligence. She claimed she has also suffered “physical and emotional pain,” “loss of enjoyment of life,” lost earnings and a diminished earning capacity and disfigurement.

The lawsuit alleges the incident occurred on Jan. 30, 2014, when Christine Crosby was walking on the sidewalk next to a building at 102 S. Market St. The lawsuit says Scaggs Properties, which owns the building, was the general contractor in charge of renovating it; Scaggs Properties had hired Bickers Construction Inc. and Lyons as subcontractors.

Hoopeston City Council approves putting city sales tax on April 2015 ballot

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, the council voted 6-1 to put a one percent sales tax on the April 2015 ballot.  A similar referendum was defeated in November 596-572.  Alderman Randy Carter said that many people who supported the sales tax felt it was not clearly communicated to residents what the money would be used for, including curbs, streets, water lines, money to attract new businesses and a dentist.  He also talked about area towns which each have city sales tax, including Watseka, Danville, Mahomet and Rantoul.

Tom Kacich: Candidates for Frerichs seat include minister

According to the News-Gazette, An update on the process to replace Mike Frerichs in the state Senate: Naomi Jakobsson doesn’t want the position but several other people do.

Jakobsson’s name has been floated as a possible contender to fill the remaining two years on the Champaign Democrat’s state Senate term, once he moves up to the office of state treasurer next month.

“You know what?” she said Tuesday. “If it were a two-year term without having to run (in 2016) I would do it.”

But the Champaign and Vermilion County Democratic Party chairmen who will name Frerichs’ successor — Al Klein and Frank Wright — want someone who not only will move into the 52nd District Senate seat for two years, but will run for election in 2016.

“Beyond those two years I don’t really have it in me,” Jakobsson said.
