Vermilion to explore consolidating county, city voting offices

According to the News-Gazette, Vermilion County officials want one office, rather than two, handling all elections within the county.

The question is which office — the county clerk or a countywide election commission?

Vermilion is in the minority of counties in Illinois that have more than one office handling elections. In Vermilion’s case, the Danville Election Commission coordinates voter registration and elections within the city of Danville, and the county clerk’s office handles the same in the rest of the county.

Beginning today, county officials want to explore a consolidation of the two, an idea that’s been tossed around through the years but received no formal consideration until now.

The Vermilion County Board’s tax and elections committee will start that discussion during its 4:30 p.m. meeting in the courthouse annex, 6 N. Vermilion St., Danville.

County Board Chairman Mike Marron said he wants to put together a group that will study two options.
