Statement from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White on the Passing of Ernie Banks

The state of Illinois, the city of Chicago and the world of sports lost an icon today in the passing of Ernie Banks.  Ernie Banks was a great man with a great heart.  While his play made him a Hall-of-Fame baseball player, it was his personality that made him a legend.

I was honored to learn many things from him while I was in the Cubs organization.  And I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with him throughout the years in our joint efforts to help others.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to his friends.  I was privileged to have played baseball with him, and to call him my friend.  Ernie Banks – Mr. Cub – will be missed.

Corporate woes closes clothing store in mall

According to the Commercial News, nother mall store is succumbing to a company bankruptcy.
Deb clothing store in the Village Mall is among the 287 retail locations closing across the country. Going out of business sales began earlier this month.
Local Deb store manager Wendy Biage said they’ve been told the store in the Village Mall could close within eight to 12 weeks.
“We knew about the financial trouble for a while,” Biage said of the company.
In addition to the discounted store merchandise, store fixtures also are being sold.
The store has eight employees. Some have been there five or six years. The store opened in the Village Mall in 1985.
Another store employee, Nancy Gonzalez, said she and other employees are looking for different employment.
Biage said some other store representatives in the mall have approached the employees about working elsewhere in the mall.
“It’s sad to see them go,” said Village Mall Manager Cindy Compton.
She said the mall still has a lot in the works. Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts Store is one new store coming.
