‘Our Town’ Hoopeston City will provide Free Food & Activities

The city of Hoopeston will provide free hamburgers and hot dogs during WCIA’s live broadcast from McFerren Park on Friday night as part of featuring Hoopeston in ‘Our Town’ to encourage residents to come out and support the town.

A small antique and classic car show is being put together too and anyone is welcome to attend.  Other entertainment is being scheduled as well including a golf cart parade during the 6:00pm news.  Contact the Hoopeston City Hall with any questions or come by McFerren Park on Friday night.

Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police Report

News Release
June 18, 2013

Sheriff’s Police returned on June 9th from Kankakee County’s Jerome Combs Dentension Center with Anthony Eldridge, 37 Kankakee.  Eldridge was wanted on Iroqouis County warrant for Failure to Appear on Theft and taken to county jail where he was later released on his own recognizance

June 12th Ronald J. Weigand, 30 Milford turned himself in to the Iroquois County jail wanted for Driving WHile License revoked and was sentenced to The Illinois Department of Corrections for 1 year

Milford Police arrested Alan E. Dilworth, 59 Milford onJune 12th for Violation of an Order of Protection and taken to the county jail and remians there in lieu of bond

Ashkum Police arrested Michael L. Causey, 34 Gilman on June 13th for Burglary and Retail Theft taken to the county jail and later posted the required bond and was released

Sheriff’s Police arrested Tiffanie Adkins, 26 Beaverville on June 14th wanted on a warrant for Failure to Appear for No valid Driver’s License and was teken to the county jail where she was later released on her own recognizance

Sheriff’s Police arrested Jo A. Coats, 50 Manteno for Battery on June 14th and took her to the county jail where she later posted required bond and was released

Gilman Police arrested William D. Manahan, 71 Onarga on June 16th for Battery and took him to the county jail where he later was released on an individual bond

Gilman Police arrested Kendra J. Manahan, 30 Onarga for Battery and took her to county jail where she later posted the required bond and was released

Accidents
June 7th Sheriff’s Police investigated a Car vs Deer Accident involving David A. Maul, 41 Rankin.  Maul was traveling northbound on 1000 E Rd when a deer entered the roadway and he was unable to avoid striking it.  No injuries were reported and his vehicle sustained more than $1500 in damage

June 16th Sheriff’s Police investigated a Car vs Deer accident involving Roger D. Brutlag, 60 Milford.  Brutlag was traveling north bound on 1980 E Rd when a Deer entered the roadway and he was unable to avoid striking it.  No injuries were reported and his vehicle sustained more than $1500 in damage

Details: Police were dispatched to above for a disturbance.  Upon arrival subject
was taken into custody for disobeying orders of the officers on the scene.
He was transported to HPD where he was released with a

Threatening a Public Official, Resisting Arrest, Possession of drug paraphernalia

Date & Time: June 17, 2013   10:43pm
Location: 800 Blk E Seminary
Arrested: Octavius Stancle (28) of Hoopeston
Details: Mr. Stancle was arrested when officers were called to the area for a domestic
disturbance.  He was charged with the above and taken to the police department
for processing.  He was later transporter to PSB in Danville to await arraignment.

Iroquois County Judge upholds Warrants against Murder Suspect

An Iroquois County Judge ruled search warrants used to arrest murder suspect, 34 year old Andrew Condon, who was charged with murdering a gas station worker in Gilman back in October 2012 was valid.

Condon’s lawyer said police had no reason to serve search warrants and wanted all evidence to be thrown out that was linked through the warrants, but the judge ruled otherwise after viewing a surveillance video of a fight between Condon and the victim.  Condon is due back in court next week.

Route 1 Hoopeston Area Closed most of Tuesday due to Accident

A traffice accident involving a farm tractor and semi closed part of Route 1 most of Tuesday.  The accident took place around 7:30am near the intersection with county Road 3870 North.  The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department shut down a two-mile section of the road from County Road 4000 North to County Road 3800 North well into the afternoon hours.

Rossville and Hoopeston firefighters and Ambulance Services responded to the scene.  Hoopeston Fire Chief, Cliff Crabtree, said the department responded and found both vehicles on fire, a couple passersby helped pull one of the crash victims from the tractor. 
According to State Police, a semi-tractor trailer driven by 39 year old Roger Baldwin was headed north on Route 1, approaching a tractor drvien by 53 year old Wendy Gernand from behind.  Gernand was attempting to turn left, Baldwin’s semi struck the tractor, pushing both vehicles into a concrete brdige rail on teh east side of the road.  Baldwin and his passenger were taken to Hoopeston Regional Hospital treated and released.  Gernand was taken to Hoopeston Regional Hospital and then airlfited to a burn center near Chicago. 
Crabtree said the diesel fuel and a farm fertilizer had been spilled at the scen as a result of the crash and the Vermilion County Haz Mat Team was called to the scene for a clean up.
Baldwin was cited for improper passing at an intersection and no valid registration.

Details: Rossville and Hoopeston Fire Departments and Ambulance services were
dispatched for a semi truck-farm tractor accident.  Several injured persons
were transported to Hoopeston Hospital.  Vermilion Co Sheriff’s Department
handled the accident scene.

Unit 2: 2012 Chev Silverado driven by David A. Ervin of Hoopeston
Details: Both units were south bound on 1550 East Rd.  Unit 2 attempted to turn
left (east) into a driveway when he was struck by Unit 1 who did not see
Unit 2’s turning signal and attempted to pass Unit 2.  Unit 1 collided with
the driver’s side of Unit 2.  No injuries, no citations, both units insured.

Unit #1: 2005 Dodge Ram truck driven by James A Crouch Sr of Milford, IL
Unit #2: 2010 Chrysler Town & Country van owned by Roger D. Everhart of Milford, IL
Details: Unit 2 was parked on the north side of W. Lincoln just east of First Ave.  Unit 1
was parked in front of Unit 2.  When the driver of Unit 1 started to leave, he
backed into Unit 2.  No injuries, no citations, both units insured.

City Ordinance Violation H13-3055 Kelnhofer
Date & Time: June 7, 2013   10:40pm
Location: 1004 E Orange St   First Church of God
Arrested: James Mullen (19) of Hoopeston
Details: Hoopeston officers received a report that unknown subjects were breaking bottles
in the parking lot of the church.  Upon arrival, Mr. Mullen was found in his vehicle
with several liquor bottles.  He was charged with city ordinance violation of Purchase
or acceptance of gift of liquor by person under 21. Subject was given a notice to appear in city court and released.

Shooting in Danville Leaves One Teen Dead and Anthoer Behind Bars

According to Vermilion County Coroner, Peggy Johnson, Adam R. Riley, 18 Danville was killed from multiple gunshots after an autopsy was conducted on Thursday afternoon.  Riley was able to describe the person who shot him before he passed away.  Police then arrested Morris L. Williams, 17 Danville for two counts of first-degree murder on Thursday morning.  He remains in the Danville Public Safety Building without bond until his initial appearance in the Vermilion County Circuit Court.

Unit #1: 1994 Ford Explorer driven by Thomas L Dalton (28) of Hoopeston
Unit #2: 2011 Toyota Avalon driven by Suzanne K Johnson of Hoopeston
Details: Both drivers were southbound on Market at the intersection with E. Main.  Driver
of Unit #2 was stopped at the intersection and the driver of Unit #1 failed to see
that Unit #2 was stopped and crashed into the rear of Unit #2.  Driver of Unit #1
was cited for Disobeying A Traffic Control Device.  No injuries and both units
were insured.

Unit #1: 2007 Chevy driven by Michael a Johnson (18) of Watseka
Unit #2: 2006 Hyundai driven by Brenda Granados (26) of Hoopeston
Details: Unit 1 collided with Unit 2 in the drive thru at McDonalds.  Unit 1 stated
his brakes failed, causing it to strike Unit 2, continuing on, hitting the
curb of the drive thru, down a hill of gravel and into IGA parking lot
where he was able to stop by applying the emergency brake.  No injuries
or citations issued.

natural gas coming from a residence in that block.  Upon further investigation

street which was found to be causing the foul odor.

Hoopeston Public Library holds tryouts for ‘Mummies in Library’ Today

The 2013 Hoopeston Public Library will be performing “Mummies in teh Library” for its Teen Performance Program.

Characters will be cast at the first meeting being held today, Tuesday, from 3:15-5:15pm at the library.  The free program runs Mondays and Tuesdays starting June 4th thru July 9th betweeen 3:15-5:15pm.  The performance will be held on Tuesday, July 9th at 6:30pm in the library’s meeting room.

Hoopeston Jaycees and National Sweetcorn Festival have been announced as a finalist in Johnsonville “Best of Us” campaign.  Jaycees are asking the community to help them win up to $10,000 for the festival.

Location: 500 block E. Chestnut and 700 block S. Fifth St
Unit 1: 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by Kip A. Menschel (27) of Hoopeston
Property: Garage owned by Todd Beatty of Hoopeston
Details: Driver of Unit 1 was south bound through a yard in the 700 block of S. 5th St
and struck a utility pole at the corner of E. Chestnut and the alley between S. 4th St and S. 5th St.  Driver then turned north bound through the alley and went into the backyard of a residence in the 700 block of S. 4th St and struck a tree.  Driver then left that scene and continued north bound, striking a garage at the rear of a residence in the 700 block of S. 5th St.  Driver then left there and continued north and then
turned east on E. Elm, proceeded to S. 6th St and turned south bound.  Once the
driver reached Route 9, he turned east bound and headed out of town.  Officers
caught up to the vehicle, where it was found in the ditch on the south side of
Route 9 approximately a 1/2 mile east of town.  Driver was taken into custody.
Driver was charged with Possession of A Controlled Substance, DUI, Illegal
Transportation of Alcohol, Leaving The Scene of an Accident (3 counts) and
Failure To Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident (3 counts).  Suspect was later
transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment in court.

inappropriately attired outside of her home causing a disturbance, by yelling
loud profanity in the presence of children, that was upsetting to several witnesses.  Female was located and transported to HPD were she was processed and later released with Notice to Appear.

Fire Destroyed Garage in Cissna Park, Damaged Exterior of Home

The Cissna Park Fire Deparment responded to a two car garage fire in rural Cissna Park Wednesday afternoon around 5p.m.

According to Fireman, Joe Young, when they arrived the garage was fully engulfed in flames and was a threat to the home.  They requested Mutual-aid from Milford Fire Department, Buckley Fire Department and Loda Fire Department.  The fire destroyed the garage, three vehicles, a motorcylce and the exterior of the home.

Unit 1: 2012 Freightliner semi driven by Daron Knapp (31) of West Covina, CA
Property: Masonic Star Lodge
Details: Driver of Unit 1 was east bound on W. Orange and missed his turn onto
2nd Avenue.  He then turned north on 1st Avenue and attempted to go around
the Masonic Star Lodge building to get back onto W. Orange.  In the process
the driver of Unit 1 cut his turn around the building too short and his trailer
collided with the building, causing significant damage to the building.  Driver
of Unit 1 was cited for Improper Lane Usage and Failure To Reduce Speed
To Avoid Accident.  No injuries.

Third Fatal Shooting in Danville

A shooting that took place around 1 a.m. Tuesday inside a home in the 900 block of Moore Street left 1 dead and 3 injured according to a press release from Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson’ Office.

If you have any information regarding this incident please contact Danville Police 217-431-2250 or Crime Stoppers 217-446-TIPS.  No arrests have been made in this shooting or another shooting that took place earlier that night in Wackley Drive.  Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason has confirmed that no additional information is being released at this time in regard to the shootings.

Sheriff’s Police arrested John R. CArter 55, Watseka and charged him with Battery after he was involved in an altercation in Crescent City.  Carter was transported to the county jail and later posted bond and was released

Sheriff’s Police arrested a 16 year old juvenile from the Onarga Academy and charged the juvenile with Aggravated Battery after beceoming involved in a physical altercation with a staff member.  The juvenile was transported to the county jail then to the Danville Juevenile Detention Center

AShkum-Illinois State Police arrested an Illinois Department of Corrections fugitive Tuesday afternoon following a foot chase in Onarga.

Michael L. Martinez, 18, was arrested on a DOC parole violation, a Ford County warrant for contempt of court on a residential burglary charge, escape from a police office and obstructing justice.
A state police special agent had stopped at an Onarga gas station when he spotted a teen who matched Martinez’ description.  He approached the teen and asked for identification but Martinez gave the agent a diffrent name.  As the officer was attempting verification, Martinez bolted from the officer.  A several block foot pursuit ensued and Martinez was taken into custody after several good Samaritans assisted and blocked his way.  He refused to admit he was indeed Martinez.
AFter being transported to the Irouqois County Jail, a fingerprint cehck confirmed his identity.
The DOC violation stemmed from Martinez cutting off his DOC ankle bracelet.

Hoopeston man killed in Two-vehicle Accident

The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department as well as Hoopeston Police and fire personnel responded to a head-on crash around 2:00pm on Wednesday along Illinois Route 9, about two miles west of Hoopeston.

Preliminary reports indicate that the accident took place in the westbound lane after a car, which was headed east, entered the west-bound lane and collided with a semi-tractor trailor.  The driver of the car, who has been identified as 30 yeear old Eli Solis Jr., of Hoopeston was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the semi was transportred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment.  An autopsy is scheudled and the accident is still under investigation by the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department and Vermilion County Coroner’s Office.

Driving While License Revoked H13-2211 Steeples

Location: 4000 North/1550 East rd
Arrested: Kyle Ponton (22) Hoopeston male
Details: Mr. Ponton was arrested during a traffic stop after a computer check revealed that
his driver’s license was revoked.  Subject was taken to HPD where he was processed
and then released after posting $150 bond, given a traffic citation and a traffic court
date.

4-22 Sheriff’s Police arrested Jessica R. Clark28, Georgetown ona Douglas County warrant on the charge of Unlawful Possession of Coverted Motor Vehicle.  She was transported to the Iroquois County Jail and later transported to the Douglas County Jail by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department

4-22 Sheriff’s Police returned from the Champaign County Jail with Kyle L. Owens, 21 Watseka.  Owens was wanted on an Iroquois County warrant for Deceptive Practice.  He remains in jail in lieu of bond

4-24 Sheriff’s Police arrested Debra A. Baez46 Martinton on an Iroquois County warrant for failure to appearo on the charge of Driving While License Suspended.  Baez was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where she later posted bond and was released

4-23 Onarga Police arrested a 16 year old juvenile from Onarga.  The juvenile was charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault.  The juvenile was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he was later taken to the Danville Juvenile Detention Center

Book donations are greatly appreciated, but at the present time, the staff is very busy with the conversion to a new computer automation system and are unable to sort and process donated items.

IDOT, Illinois State Police & Highway Safety Partners will join forces with a message “Embrace the Orange” and be aware of workers in honor of National Work Zone Awareness Week today at 10:00am at U.S. Rt. 136 in front of Danville Area Community College.

The news conference will discuss the ban on cell phone use in work zones to help reduce traffic related crashes, injuries and fatalities in work zones, and will stress the importance of moving over for emergency, maintenance and construction vehicles when driving on all roadways in Illinois.  National Work Zone Awareness Week runs April 15th-19th.

Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police Report

News Release
April 2, 2013

4-1 Sheriff’s Police arrested Jeremy M. Kraud, 33 Watseka charging him with Domestic Battery after becoming involved in a physical altercation with his ex girlfriend.  Kraud was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he remains awaiting a court appearance

4-1 Sherriff’s Police investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on 2100 E Rd near 2100 N Rd.  The Police report stated a 16 year old femal juvenile was traveling northbound on 2100 E Rdwhen she swerved to miss a deer and lost control of the vehicle, it began to skid out of control crossing over to the west side of the roadway where it entered into the ditch and struck an embankment causing it to overturn before coming to a rest on its roof in the ditch.  The 16 year old juvenile and her four juvenile passengers were transported to IMH by IMH EMS and Martinton EMS, two of the juveniles were then airlifted to Carle for treatment of injuries.  The severity of the injuries are unknown at this time.  The 16 year old driver was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Operating in Violation of Restriction or Restricted Driving Permit, Graduated Driver:  More than one passenger under age 20 and unlawful number of passengers.  Watseka Fire Department also responded to the scene

Unit #1: 2013 Chrysler van driven by Skylar M. Reeves (16) of Hoopeston
Unit #2: 2011 Dodge Ram driven by Sandra J Kinnaird (53) of Hoopeston and owned
by Star Chrysler Inc of Hoopeston
Details: Unit #1 was backing out of driveway when it struck Unit #2 which as traveling
westbound.  Driver of Unit 1 was issued citation for Improper Backing.
No injuries.

Location: 200 blk N Market
Complainant: 34 year old Hoopeston female
Arrested: Moises Torres (29) Hoopeston male
Details: At the above time and date, Mr. Torres was arrested after causing damage to the
tires on a vehicle of the complainant’s.  Subject was taken to HPD where he was
processed and then later transported to the PSB in Danville for arraignment.


Aggravated Battery H13-1567 Steeples

Complainant: 43 year old Hoopeston male
Arrested: Jerimiah Foehrer (27) of Hoopeston
Details: After an incident and the above location, Mr. Foehrer was arrested for aggravated
battery.  He was taken to HPD where he was processed then later transported to
the PSB in Danville for arraignment.

Arrested: Justin Vazquez (20) of Plano, IL
Details: Mr. Vazquez was arrested after HPD received a call in reference to a fight in
progress and he refused to let police inside business.  Subject was arrested for
the above charge and taken to HPD.  He was processed and released on a city
citation and given a notice to appear in city court.

(16) year old juvenile
Details: After a traffic stop, both subjects were arrested on the above charge.  They were
taken to HPD where they were processed and released on a notice to appear
in city court.

Location: 500 blk S 2nd Av
Complainant: (30) year old Hoopeston male
Arrested: David T. Cannon (33) of Hoopeston
Details: Mr. Cannon was arrested for battery after an incident at the above location.  Subject
was taken to HPD where he was processed and then later released on an ROR bond
and given a county court date.

Arrested: Tierra L Kelly (16) of Rankin
Details: Subject was issued citation after vehicle was checked on the side of road at
the above location. Computer checked revealed her Driver’s Privileges to be
invalidated.  She was issued a citation at the scene and vehicle was towed.

Details: Subject was issued a citation for the above after she knowingly allowed
subject to drive her vehicle who did not have a valid Driver’s License.

Arrested: Zachary T Garman (21) of Hoopeston
Details: Officers responded to the above for and underage drinking party.  Upon arrival
above subject was walking in area with an open container of alcohol.  He
was taken into custody and transported to HPD where he received a City
Ordinance citation and was released.

Details:    At the above time and date, the subject was taken into custody on the above warrant
issued out of Effingham County 08DT193 FTA DUI $5,000 10% plus $75.00
subject was transported to HPD processed and then later transported to PSB
in lieu of bond.

Arrested:    Catron, Roger D (54) of Hoopeston
Details: At the above time and date, the subject was detained for questioning concerning an
incident that occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington on March 21, 2013.  Subject was later charged with the following:
1:  Possession of Methamphetamines
2:  Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
3:  Possession of Methamphetamine Precursors
4:  Aggregated Methamphetamine Production

Details: At the above time and date, while subject was being questioned the following charges
came about from the alleged drugs found in the subjects possession.

3:  Participating in Methamphetamine Manufacturing
4:  Possession of Methamphetamines
5:  Methamphetamine Manufacturing Materials
6:  Methamphetamine Precursors Non Standard Form
7:  Prescription
Subject has been transported to the PSB Danville to be arraigned on the charges, and held for the IDOC Warrant.

Possession of Methamphetamines & Forgery (3 counts) H13-1516   V13-3023 Cade
Date & Time: March 28, 2013 6:54am
Location: 1022 W. Penn and 115 E. Orange
Victim: Casey’s General Stores
Arrested: James W. Blakeney Jr (27) of Wellington
Details: Suspect was taken into custody at approximately 7:40am in the 400 block of
South Dixie Hwy after allegedly passing forged personal checks at both of the
Casey’s stores in Hoopeston.  Suspect was also found to be in possession of
suspected Methamphetamines when he was taken into custody.  He was later
transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment in court.

Date & Time: March 28, 2013 2pm
Location: Hoopeston Police Department 301 W Main St
Arrested: Blakeney, Stacy R (F) of Hoopeston (26)
Details: At the above time and date, the subject came to HPD and surrendered herself
to custody on a Vermilion County Traffic Warrant FTA   13TR1079 and posted
bond of $1,000 10% plus $75 court fee.  She was processed and then later
released on new court date for Danville

Location: 400 block N. Eighth Ave
Arrested: Jarrod C. Burton (19) of Hoopeston
Details: Suspect was taken into custody on two outstanding Vermilion County arrest
warrants (12CF184 Petition To Revoke Bond and 13CF161 eight counts of drug
charges).  He was later transported to the PSB in Danville in lieu of $100,000
bond.


Burglary To Motor Vehicle H13-1473 Tate
Date & Time: March 26, 2013 1:08pm
Location: 400 block W. Elm
Victim: 31 year old Hoopeston man
Details: Victim advised that unknown subject(s) broke into his vehicle while it was
parked at the above location and stole several items.

Congregate Meal being offered in Hoopeston Starting in April

Thanks to the partnership of CRIS Healthy Aging, the Hoopeston Multi-Agency and Heritage Health of Hoopeston a congregate meal site for seniors will be offered starting April, 2nd for lunch on Tuesdays & Fridays at the Hoopeston Multi-Agency.

A Grand Opening will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd at the Multi-Agency.  People 60 and older may call the Mult-Agency 217.283.5544 or CRIS at 217.443.2999 by noon April 1st to reserve a meal.

Traffic Accident H13-1447 Welch
Date & Time: March 24, 2013 5:27pm
Location: S Dixie Hwy/Honeywell
Unit 1: 2006 Freightliner Semi driven by Gerald Allen of Milford
Unit 2: 1994 GMC truck driven by Sawyer Burgett of Wellington
Details: Unit 2 was traveling southbound in the 1000 block of Dixie Hwy when it reduced
speed.  Unit 1 was unable to stop and moved into the turn lane but struck Unit 2
with it’s trailer.  No injuries, no tickets and both units had insurance.
