On January 30th, 2013 Hoopeston Police officers met with a Hoopeston Area High School student and his parents after receiving several calls from concerned parents reporting that the student planned to bring a gun to the school on January 31st.
Parents and police monitored social networking sites and there was chatter about the student coming to the school with a gun. The Hoopeston Police Department was in contact with administrators of the Hoopeston Area School District throughout the night and we appreciate their assistance.
The student and parents were cooperative in the investigation and it was determined that there was never a threat communicated electronically. At this time we are unable to confirm that any threat was ever made, merely rumors were expressed via Facebook, Twitter and emails and texts amongst students. Officers searched the student and his home and there was nothing found that would confirm the rumors.
To assure the parents and students of their safety, there was a police presence at the high school yesterday morning.
This was a proactive rather than a reactive incident, and it appears no one was in danger at anytime. The Hoopeston Police Department and Hoopeston Area High Schools top priority is insuring the safety of its citizens and students.
