Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police Report

News Release
May 18, 2013

Sheiff’s Police arrested Nicholas J. Stumpfol, 24 St. Anne and charged him with Driving While License Suspended, Texting while driving, Failure to Report an Accident and LEaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage.  Stumpfol was transported to the county jail where he later posted bond and was released

Sheriff’s Police arrested John R. CArter 55, Watseka and charged him with Battery after he was involved in an altercation in Crescent City.  Carter was transported to the county jail and later posted bond and was released

Sheriff’s Police arrested a 16 year old juvenile from the Onarga Academy and charged the juvenile with Aggravated Battery after beceoming involved in a physical altercation with a staff member.  The juvenile was transported to the county jail then to the Danville Juevenile Detention Center

Austin D. Johnston, 18 Wellington turned himself in at the Iroquois County Jail.  Johnston is to serve 30 day sentenct on the charge of Criminal Damage to Property over $500

Sheldon Police arrested Ryan K. Mercier, 30 Milford and charged him with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol over .08, No Valid Driver’s License, Reckless Driving and Illegal Sqeauling/Screeching Tires,  Mercier was transported to the county jail where he remains in lieu of bond

Clifton Police arrested Cliff E. Lemenager, 19 Ashkum and charged him with Possession of Cannabis 2.5-10 grams and Possesssion of Paraphernalia.  Lemenager was transported to the county jail where he posted bond and was released

Location:      100 block E Orange St Hoopeston
Unit 1: White 2005 Chrysler Coupe driven by Libbie M Goble (17) of Rossville (F)
Unit 2:  Red Pontiac Grand Am driven by Kaytelyn M Cappellano (17) of Hoopeston (F)
Details:  At the above time and date, HPD was requested to respond to investigate a
traffic accident on State Route 9 near Casey’s General Store.  Unit 1 struck
Unit 2, both units insured, no injuries reported, and both units driven away.

impeding traffic on the roadway due to smoke.

Complainant: Dollar General Store
Arrested: Erica M Estrada (29) of Hoopeston
Details: Manager of store called police after witnessing suspect leave the store
without paying for several items.  She was later located and taken into
custody.  She was transported to HPD where she was released after
posting $100 bond.

Illinois State Police News

AShkum-Illinois State Police arrested an Illinois Department of Corrections fugitive Tuesday afternoon following a foot chase in Onarga.

Michael L. Martinez, 18, was arrested on a DOC parole violation, a Ford County warrant for contempt of court on a residential burglary charge, escape from a police office and obstructing justice.
A state police special agent had stopped at an Onarga gas station when he spotted a teen who matched Martinez’ description.  He approached the teen and asked for identification but Martinez gave the agent a diffrent name.  As the officer was attempting verification, Martinez bolted from the officer.  A several block foot pursuit ensued and Martinez was taken into custody after several good Samaritans assisted and blocked his way.  He refused to admit he was indeed Martinez.
AFter being transported to the Irouqois County Jail, a fingerprint cehck confirmed his identity.
The DOC violation stemmed from Martinez cutting off his DOC ankle bracelet.

Iroquois County Crime Stoppers

May 15, 2013
The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information regarding an incident that occurred over the weekend at the Milford Grade School’s East Campus in Sheldon.

In that incident, unknown person(s) gained entry to the school and vandalized the inside of the building, as well as, a school bus.  If you have any information concerning this crime or any other crime, please call Crime Stoppers at (815) 432-7463.  You will not be asked your name and could receive up to a $1,000 cash reward.

Officers came upon a disturbance at the Downtown Motel and Cannon causing a disturbance was taken into custody and charged with Disorderly Conduct.  After search he was found to have cannabis in his possession.  He was released with a Notice to Appear in Hoopeston City Court and was released

5-8 Sheriff’s Police arrested Roger L. Hanford, 40 Donovan and charged him with Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Damage to Property under $500.  He was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he remains in lieu of bond

5-9 Sheriff’s Police arrested a 16 yr0old juvenile from Champaign wanted on a Champaign County warrant.  Juvenile was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where she was later picked up by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Department

5-9 James P. Minard, 41 Terra Haute, IN turned himself in at the Iroquois County Jail wanted on an Iroquois County Warrant for failure to appear on the charge of Driving While License Revoked.  Minard posted the required bond and was released

5-9 Pamela Lowe, 27 Piper City turned herself in at the Iroquois County Jail wanted on an Iroquois County warrant for failure to appear on the charge of Manufacturing/Delivering of Cannibas.  Lowe posted the required bond and was released

Arrested: Brian Dry (34) of Oak Park
Details: Mr. Dry was arrested on city charge for License Required when Soliciting.  He
was transported to HPD and released with a city ticket and notice to appear in

Hoopeston man killed in Two-vehicle Accident

The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department as well as Hoopeston Police and fire personnel responded to a head-on crash around 2:00pm on Wednesday along Illinois Route 9, about two miles west of Hoopeston.

Preliminary reports indicate that the accident took place in the westbound lane after a car, which was headed east, entered the west-bound lane and collided with a semi-tractor trailor.  The driver of the car, who has been identified as 30 yeear old Eli Solis Jr., of Hoopeston was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the semi was transportred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment.  An autopsy is scheudled and the accident is still under investigation by the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department and Vermilion County Coroner’s Office.

5-6 Sheriff’s Police arrested a 17-year old juvenile from Beaverville charging him with Domestic Battery.  He was transported to the county jail and later released to a family member

5-6 Sheriff’s Police returned from Kankakee County Jail with Johnnie D. Matthews, 31 Chicago.  He was wanted on an Iroquois County warrant fro failure to appear on the charge of Driving While License Suspended and a Vermilion County warrant for failure to appear on the charge of Driving Under the Influence.  He was given a personal recognizance bond and was later picked up by Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department

5-8 Sheriff’s Police arrested Jessica F. Pilkington, 31 Loda charging her with Criminal Damage to Property under $500.  She was transported to the county jail and later posted bond and was released

Stamp Out Hunger

Saturday, May 11th will mark the 21st annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive and local Hoopeston letter carriers are involved in the effort.

On Saturday, Hoopeston Post Office patrons can leave non-perishable food items by their mailboxes for letter carriers to pick up.  All donations will be given to Grant Township Food Cupboard.

Unit 1: 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Tyler C. Griffin (22) of Rossville
Property: Landscaping at Flowers and Gifts by Molly Culbert 702 W. Main
Details: Driver of Unit 1 was driving recklessly, doing “donuts” with his vehicle in the
intersection of W. Main and S. Sixth Ave and lost control of his vehicle, driving
up into the yard at 702 W. Main and getting his vehicle stuck in the sod.  He
was taken into custody and cited for Driving Under The Influence and
Reckless Driving.  He was later released after posting his driver’s license and
$100 cash bond.

Unit 1: 1994 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Troy D. Abernathy (49) of Hoopeston
Property: Mailbox owned by James DeWitt of Hoopeston
Details: Driver of Unit 1 was north bound on N. Market and swerved off the road to the
east side, struck and destroyed a mailbox.  He then pulled away and continued
north bound when he was stopped by HPD officer.  Driver was taken into custody
and cited for Driving Under The Influence, Failure To Reduce Speed To Avoid
An Accident, Failure To Stop and Give Information Following An Accident,
Operating a Motor Vehicle with Expired Registration and Illegal Transportation of
Alcohol.  Suspect was later released after posting his driver’s license and $100
cash bond.

Arrested: Vicki L Ford (55) of Hoopesotn
Details: Officer responded to the above for help to remove a subject from the residence
who was causing problems.  Upon arrival subject started arguing with officers
and was refusing to cooperate.  She was taken into custody and transported to
HPD where she was released with a Hoopeston City Notice To Appear.

with mace.  He was transported to HPD where he was released after

Arrested: Amy Nosler (40) of Hoopeston
Details: HPD was called to the above address in reference to a report of an illegal fire
burning unattended and close to a structure.  Ms. Nosler was given a city citation
and court date for Restrictions for Burning Trash.

Details:      At the above time and date, HPD was requested to meet with a battery victim, whom
wished to pursue City Ordinance of Battery, against the suspect.
Suspect was later located and taken to HPD processed and release on NTA for
Hoopeston City Court. 


Driving While License Revoked H13-2211 Steeples
Date & Time: May 2, 2013   8:10pm
Location: 4000 North/1550 East rd
Arrested: Kyle Ponton (22) Hoopeston male
Details: Mr. Ponton was arrested during a traffic stop after a computer check revealed that
his driver’s license was revoked.  Subject was taken to HPD where he was processed
and then released after posting $150 bond, given a traffic citation and a traffic court
date.

Dave McFadden, owner of Anthem Chevrolet, was selected by Hoopeston Area Education Association and Illinois Education Association as the District’s newest Friend of Education.

This was for his many contributions to the area schools.  He received a plaque for his honor.

Location: Market & Maple
Arrested: Kip A Menschel (27) of Hoopeston
Details: Officers performed traffic stop on the vehicle driven by the above subject
after they witnessed vehicle squealing tires and driving at high rate of speed.
Stop also revealed no valid registration or insurance on vehicle.
He was issued 3 citations and vehicle was towed from the scene.

Date & Time: May 1,2013 10:10pm
Location: Parkview Court
Complainant: 43 year old Hoopeston man
Arrested #1: Devon R Thomas (18) of Hoopeston
Arrested #2: 17 year old Hoopeston male
Details: Both subjects were charged after the police responded to the above location
for subjects being loud and sitting on the callers car.  Caller signed a complaint
against both subjects.  They were transported to HPD where they were
issued a Notice To Appear in Hoopeston city court.

Details: At the above time and date, Subject came to HPD and surrendered herself on
the Vermilion County Warrant 12TR07638 FTA Bench Trial Operation Uninsured
Vehicle and Disobeying a Traffic Control Device The subject was processed
and released after posting the required bond of $275 cash,  with a new court date.

Unit 2:    1995 Lincoln 4dr driven by Betty J Comstock (F) of Hoopeston (53)
Details:      At the above time and date, HPD was requested to respond and investigate
an accident,  Unit 1 was backing from a driveway and did not observe Unit 2
and struck Unit 2.  Minor damage, both units insured, no injuries, no tickets

Details:      At the above time and date, HFD was requested to respond to a residence that had
a hot water heater blow up.  Apparent malfunction on the heater from use of aerosol
spray in a confine space cause the ignition.  No injuries and or damage reported

Details:      At the above time and date, owner of a pickup truck called HFD to respond to flames
under the hood.  HFD was dispatched to the scene fire was out up on arrival,  Unit had

Restraint of Dogs by Owner H13-2109 Steeples

Complainant: Hoopeston woman
Arrested: Beau J Edwards (33) of Hoopeston
Details: Officers responded to the above location for a complaint of 2 loose dogs
acting aggressive towards their own dogs.  Dogs were identified as Edwards’
dogs.  Complainant signed a City Ordinance Citation.  A Notice To Appear
in Hoopeston City Court, was mailed to Edwards.

Arrested: 15 year old Hoopeston juvenile
Details: Juvenile was arrested and brought to HPD after admitting to officers that he

4-22 Sheriff’s Police arrested Jessica R. Clark28, Georgetown ona Douglas County warrant on the charge of Unlawful Possession of Coverted Motor Vehicle.  She was transported to the Iroquois County Jail and later transported to the Douglas County Jail by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department

4-22 Sheriff’s Police returned from the Champaign County Jail with Kyle L. Owens, 21 Watseka.  Owens was wanted on an Iroquois County warrant for Deceptive Practice.  He remains in jail in lieu of bond

4-24 Sheriff’s Police arrested Debra A. Baez46 Martinton on an Iroquois County warrant for failure to appearo on the charge of Driving While License Suspended.  Baez was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where she later posted bond and was released

4-23 Onarga Police arrested a 16 year old juvenile from Onarga.  The juvenile was charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault.  The juvenile was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he was later taken to the Danville Juvenile Detention Center

The Hoopeston Public Library is asking local residents to refrain from donating books to the library until further notice.

Book donations are greatly appreciated, but at the present time, the staff is very busy with the conversion to a new computer automation system and are unable to sort and process donated items.

IDOT, Illinois State Police & Highway Safety Partners will join forces with a message “Embrace the Orange” and be aware of workers in honor of National Work Zone Awareness Week today at 10:00am at U.S. Rt. 136 in front of Danville Area Community College.

The news conference will discuss the ban on cell phone use in work zones to help reduce traffic related crashes, injuries and fatalities in work zones, and will stress the importance of moving over for emergency, maintenance and construction vehicles when driving on all roadways in Illinois.  National Work Zone Awareness Week runs April 15th-19th.

Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police Report

News Release
April 2, 2013

4-1 Sheriff’s Police arrested Jeremy M. Kraud, 33 Watseka charging him with Domestic Battery after becoming involved in a physical altercation with his ex girlfriend.  Kraud was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he remains awaiting a court appearance

4-1 Sherriff’s Police investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on 2100 E Rd near 2100 N Rd.  The Police report stated a 16 year old femal juvenile was traveling northbound on 2100 E Rdwhen she swerved to miss a deer and lost control of the vehicle, it began to skid out of control crossing over to the west side of the roadway where it entered into the ditch and struck an embankment causing it to overturn before coming to a rest on its roof in the ditch.  The 16 year old juvenile and her four juvenile passengers were transported to IMH by IMH EMS and Martinton EMS, two of the juveniles were then airlifted to Carle for treatment of injuries.  The severity of the injuries are unknown at this time.  The 16 year old driver was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Operating in Violation of Restriction or Restricted Driving Permit, Graduated Driver:  More than one passenger under age 20 and unlawful number of passengers.  Watseka Fire Department also responded to the scene

Details: Unit 2 was traveling southbound in the 1000 block of Dixie Hwy when it reduced
speed.  Unit 1 was unable to stop and moved into the turn lane but struck Unit 2
with it’s trailer.  No injuries, no tickets and both units had insurance.

Arrested: Joshua A Pundt (33) of Danville
Details: Suspect was taken into custody on the above charges following an incident
in the parking lot at the hospital.  The subject was later transported to the PSB
in Danville to await arraignment in court.  Suspect is also being held on an
IDOC Warrant (CH1302633) for Violation of Parole because of this incident.

The Hoopeston Bowling Association has annoucned its 2013 Hall of Fame inductees.

        The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Bowl For Kids Sake-Cancelled in Hoopeston

Rose Denton, Executive Director for Big Brother/Big Sister said in a press release due to lack of participation the Bowl For Kids Sake has been cancelled at Fast Lanes in Hoopeston this Saturday, March 2nd.

Iroquois County Sheriff’s Report

News Release
February 25, 2013

2-22 Sheriff’s Police arrested two 17 year old juveniles from Fowler, IN along with Bradley J. English 18, Goodland, IN and JasonA. Deason, 18 West Lafayette, IN.  All four subjects were charged with Criminal Trespass to Property and Illegal Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor.  They were transported to the Iroquois County Jail where they were later released to a parent
2-22 Sheriff’s Police arrested Craig A. LaBounty, 52 Wellington wanted on an Iroquois County Writ of Body Attachment.  He was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he posted bond and was released
2-22 Sheriff’s Police arrested James W. Blakeney Jr., 27 Wellington wanted on an Iroquois County warrant for Unlawful Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.  He was transported to the Iroquois County Jail where he later posted bond and was released

Sheriff’s Police investigated a single vehicle accident according to the report, Jeffrey W. Janssen, 49 Watseka was traveling northbound on 2200 E Rd when he lost control of his vehicle on teh ice covered roadway, his vehicle the entered the west ditch where it struck a road sign and then a utility pole before coming to a rest.  No injuries were reported and no citations were issued.  Damages were estimated at more than $1500

Body I.D.‘d as Missing Hoopeston Woman

Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson issued a press release on Monday confirming the identity as 33 year old Amanda Walters-Pentecost, who had been reported missing on February 1st in Hoopeston.

The preliminary cause of death for Walters-Pentecost was exposure to cold weather according to Johnson.  The preliminary autopsy results did not give an indication of how long she had been dead and there were no indications of fould play.  Toxicology tests on samples taken during the autopsy are still pending in the case and the time range for toxicology test results can range from as little as four weeks to as many as eight weeks.
