Fatal Traffic Accident - Jimmy Lee Westbrook, 58 of Brownsville, TN, and Good Samaritan: Jack S Douglas, 80 of Bartlett, IL were killed.
Westbrook broke down on the northbound shoulder after losing a driver’s side tire and rim of his vehicle. Westbrook was outside his vehicle attempting to retrieve his tire that had entered into the center median. As Westbrook crossed into the northbound lanes from the median with his tire, he was fatally struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Edward Fahrforth, 61 of Summit, IL.
A Good Samaritan, Jack S Douglas, 80 of Bartlett, IL, stopped to assist Westbrook who was lying in traffic and assisted Westbrook’s female passenger in dragging Westbrook onto the shoulder out of traffic. The Good Samaritan spoke with Westbrook’s passenger and said he would call for help and while crossing the roadway the Good Samaritan was struck by a 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Sook Hwang, 59 of Champaign, IL. The Good Samaritan was transported by ambulance to Carle Hospital in Champaign. Westbrook was pronounced dead on the scene and the Good Samaritan died at Carle Hospital at 11:01PM.
Interstate 57 northbound lanes were shut down with the assistance of the Fire Department and Illinois Department of Transportation for approximately 2.5 hours. Traffic was redirected at the Buckley Exit.
The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction unit, however, no citations have been issued at this time.
