Brandon Paul scored 14 points and D.J. Richardson overcame a shoulder injury to add 11 and help 10th-ranked Illinois hold off Norfolk State 64-54 last night. The 11-0 Illini were coming off a win at Gonzaga on Saturday that helped move them into the top 10. Illinois shot just 35 percent (21 for 60) against Norfolk State. The Illini were 6 for 23 (26 percent) on 3-pointers and 16 for 27 (59 percent) from the free-throw line.
The #3 Michigan Wolverines are 10-0 and off to their best start since their national title season of 1988-89. They beat Binghampton last night 67-39.
#13 Minnesota 70 – North Dakota State 57
former commissioner Paul Tagliabue overturned the suspensions of four current and former New Orleans Saints players in a case that has preoccupied the league for almost a year.
Tagliabue, appointed by commissioner Roger Goodell to handle the appeals, still found that three of the players engaged in conduct detrimental to the league. He said they participated in a performance pool that rewarded key plays—including bone-jarring hits—that could merit fines.
The Chicago Bears placed kicker Robbie Gould on injured reserve because of a calf injury suffered Sunday at Minnesota, and used his roster spot to sign veteran kicker Olindo Mare. (MAR-ay). Mare has been in the NFL 16 seasons and last kicked for the Carolina Panthers.
