Here’s Your WHPO Sports Update…...
The Chicago Bears started the first day of free agency with two big signings:
First they signed New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod to a five-year contract worth $35.9 million. The deal will make Bushrod the highest paid offensive lineman in team history.
The Bears also signed former New York Giants tight end Martellus Bennett to a four-year contract. Bennett caught a career-high 55 passes for 626 yards and five touchdowns in 2012, also showing consistency as a run-blocker.

World Baseball Classic:
USA beat Puerto Rico 7 -1. The Americans will play Thursday night against the Dominican Republic, who is unbeaten in the WBC
Notre Dame and the Big East reached an agreement Tuesday allowing the Fighting Irish to leave the league two years early and join the ACC on July 1. The Fighting Irish announced last year they were joining the ACC in all sports except football.
The field of 16 teams for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men Basketball tournament has been set. Play begins at Danville Area Community College March 19 and runs through March 23, 2013.
A tournament pass, which is good for all games, is available for
$35.00. Tickets are $6.00 each session/morning, afternoon or evening. Tickets for DACC students and senior citizens are $3.00 and children 6 and under are free for all games.

…speaking of soccer …. there are several opportunities for local soccer coaches-in-training and players to learn more about the game. First, Hoopeston Are youth soccer continues to take sign-ups for its first-ever April 6-May 6 Saturday academy program – a program similar to the very successful youth basketball academy that just wrapped up….also there are free soccer coaching clinics the next two Sundays, March 17 & 24 from 5-6:30 at the Hoopeston H.S. for coaches & parents wanting to learn more about the game…..and Hoopeston Area Youth Soccer is also announcing that the Chicago Fire MLS team will host an elite camp in Hoopeston July 8 – 12.
