Jeff Samardzija allowed just two hits and struck out nine over eight innings as the Cubs held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 on Monday for their first opening day victory in four years.

the White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 in their season opener

Cardinals lost to the Diamonbacks 6 – 2

NCAA Basketball…

Tubby Smith has agreed to terms to become the next coach at Texas Tech.  Smith was fired by Minnesota last week after six seasons.

The Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators 3 -2 in a shootout.

Oakwood beat Hoopeston Area 10 – 9.  Andrew Samet had 3 hits for the Cornjerkers

Schlarman Academy beat Bismarck-Henning 11 – 5.

in Softball:

Hoopeston Area beat Oakwood 7 – 3 behind Devin McFadden’s 3 hits and 5 RBIs.

in H.S. Track:

Maddie Brown won both the 1600 and 3200 meter events, though both the Hoopeston Area boys and girls track teams lost their meet at Bismarck yesterday.
