Here’s Your WHPO Summer Sports Minute…..

MLB….
National League manager Bruce Bochy (“bo-chee”) named the Mets’ Matt Harvey as the NL starter for tonight’s All-Star game at New York’s Citi Field.  American League manager counterpart Jim Leyland said his own guy, Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer (“sher-zer”), will start for the AL.  Scherzer is the first pitcher in 27 years to win 13 games without a loss. 

from last night’s Home Run Derby:
The Oakland A’s Yoenis Cespedes (“yo-nes…cess-pe-dez”)  won last night’s Home Run Derby…..beating the Nationals’ Bryce Harper 9-8 in the final round.


Soccer….

The Hoopeston Area boys varsity soccer team completed a 5-game sweep of its own annual summer Invitational – outscoring its opponents 27-2 this past weekend.  Hoopeston beat teams including St. Joe-Ogden, Blue Ridge and St. Thomas Moore.  The Cornjerkers compete in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Invitational this coming weekend in Indianapolis.

Hoopeston Cornjerker football camp for grades 3-12 will be held July 22-25. Grades 3-6 will practice from 9-11 a.m. Grades 7-12 will hit the field from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $15, payable to HAHS Football. Registration Deadline was July 5, so contact Coach Michl Kearney, at 283-6661 to get your player signed up.

Hoopeston Hornet Youth Football, Cheer & Dance sign-ups have started.  The next dates to register are July 20, 10-2 and July 21 Noon-2.  Contact President Jeff Compton at 772-1398 for more information


Also….youth soccer sign-ups are happening now – visit danvillesoccer.org to register your player for the fall Danville Area Soccer Association season.  July 20 is the cut-off to avoid a late fee.  Find Hoopeston Area Youth Soccer on Facebook…or contact your local rep for information on your town playing in the annual fall rec league at Winter Park in Danville.
