Here’s Your WHPO Sports Update…...
The Indiana Hoosiers won their first out-right Big 10 regular season title since 1993 after beating Michigan yesterday 72 – 71. Cody Zeller had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers who will be the #1 seed in the Big Ten tournament and are a likely #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
#14 Ohio State beat Illinois 68 – 55….taking 2nd in the Big Ten regular season standings after the Indiana win. The Buckeyes were lead by Aaron Craft’s 14 points and 6 assists. The Illini were led by Brandon Paul’s 21 points. The Illini will play Minnesota on Thursday in the opening round of the Big Ten conference tournament.
#10 Michigan State beat Northwestern 71 – 61
#22 Wisconsin got by Penn State 63 – 60 on a last second shot by Traevon Jackson.
Teams that earned automatic bids to the NCAAs after winning their conference tournaments this weekend: Florida Gulf Coast, Liberty, Harvard, Creighton, and Belmont
Matt Kenseth won Sunday’s Sprint Cup race in Las Vegas.
And Sam Hornish, Jr. won the Nationwide series race on Saturday, also at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The Miami Heat won their 18th straight, beating the Pacers 105 – 91
The Bulls lost to the Lakers 90 – 81
Dallas over Minnesota
New Orleans got by Portland
Orlando beat Philadelphia
Toronto beat Cleveland
OKC beat Boston
Clippers easily beat the Pistons
Milwaukee got by Sacramento
The US advanced to the 2nd round of the World Baseball Classic after beating Canada yesterday 9 – 4.
The Chicago Blackhawks lost the 2nd game in a row – dropping Sunday’s match to the Edmonton Oilers 6-5.
Tiger Woods won the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, FL with a 1-under 71 on Sunday, finishing the tournament 19 under par – 2 shots ahead of Steve Stricker.
Congrats….to Hoopeston Area Youth wrestler Jack Simpson who finished 4th at the 215 lb Senior division at this weekend’s IKWF State Tournament in Rockford. Simpson finished the season 25-4.
