Bill D. Gholson Sr., 84, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 1:53 P.M. Tuesday August 7, 2018 at his home. He was born July 3, 1934 in Hoopeston, IL, the son of Vernon and Helen (Thornburg) Gholson. He married Willia Mae Thomas on July 27, 1951 in Wellington, IL. She preceded him in death on December 21, 1980.
He is survived by four daughters, Gloria (Jim) Cade of Woodbury, MN, Sheila (Doug) Stabile of Oakton, VA, Nora Gholson of Hoopeston, IL, and Brenda (Brian) Stevens of Port Washington, WI; one son, Dr. Bill D. (Jane) Gholson of Ashland, OR; 5 sisters, Mary (Earl) Knapp of Bloomington, IL, Alice Butts of Tilton, IL, Shirley (Butch) Sondgerath of Ambia, IN, Betty Boehme of Hoopeston, IL, and Pat (Ron) Sondgerath of Indianapolis, IN; 7 grandchildren, Jeanne, Tim, and Zachary Cade, Spencer and Max Stabile, and Chloe and Kenzie Stevens; 3 great-grandchildren, Elijah, Maddox, and Aziza Cade; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his longtime friend and companion, Ruth Neathery.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Vernon (June) Gholson, Carl (Helma) Gholson, Bob (Marcella) Gholson, and Bernard Gholson; and 3 brothers-in-law, Earl Knapp, Larry Butts, and Wayne Boehme.
Bill worked at American Can for 43 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a past member of the First Church of God in Hoopeston and the Hoopeston Historical Society. He enjoyed watching boxing and martial arts. Bill loved Civil War history and genealogy.
A visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Monday August 13, 2018 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 1:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Adam Taubert officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.
