George Matthew Walter, 95, of Hoopeston, IL formerly of Rossville

George Matthew Walter, 95, of Hoopeston, IL formerly of Rossville, IL, passed away at 3:40 P.M. Sunday March 3, 2019 at Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center.  He was born June 25, 1923, in Danville, IL, the son of Cecil Earl and Faye (Matthews) Walter.  He married Lucille Watkins on September 2, 1945.  She preceded him in death on December 16, 1991.  He later married Virginia (Stewart) Kider on January 25, 1997 and she preceded him in death on January 21, 2017.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Null of Rossville, IL; two sons, Timothy (Rosemary) Walter of Morton, IL and Dean (Sheila) Walter of Rossville, IL; two step-sisters; one half-brother, Walter (Ruth) Duncan of Covington, IN; one sister-in-law, Freda Walter of Danville, IL; one step-son-in-law, Dick (Judy) Stump of Rossville, IL; 9 grandchildren, Melissa (David) Haydek, Jennifer (Jeremy) Bencher, Rachel (Isaac) Downing, Daniel Walter, John (Elizabeth) Walter, Telisa Walter, Jamie (August) Christhilf, Karen (Joe) Haggerty, and Kevin (DeEtte) Stump; 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tom Walter; one step-daughter, Jackie Stump; two brothers, Ed Walter and Bill (Betty) Walter; 6 step-brothers and sisters.

George was an instrument technician and electrician for Allied Chemical for 30 years until his retirement.  He served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946.  He was a charter member of the founding board of the Danville Consolidated Credit Union.  George was a deacon, elder, and teacher at the Antioch Church of Christ and later joined the Rossville United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, and feeding the wildlife.  He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.

A visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Friday March 8, 2019 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL.  The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 1:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home, with Pastor Chris Quick officiating.  Military rites will be accorded by the Hoopeston American Legion Post #384.  Following the service, cremation rites will be accorded.
