Dorothy Jean Eighner, 95, of Hoopeston

Dorothy Jean Eighner, 95, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 2:55 P.M. Saturday March 16, 2024, at The Waters of Covington in Covington, IN. She was born October 21, 1928, at home in rural Rankin, IL, the daughter of Richard and Minnie Ray (Rusk) Hatfield. She married John Henry “Jack” Eighner on November 30, 1947, at the East Lynn United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jean (John) Beckwith of St. Joseph, IL; one son, Stanley Eugene (Marg) Eighner of New Lenox, IL; one sister, Margaret Sims of Hoopeston, IL; three grandchildren, Heather (Phil) Obiala, Lindsay (Anthony) Merlo, and Steve (Ashley) Eighner; seven great-grandchildren, Phillip, Parker, and Piper Obiala, Anthony and James Merlo, and Maggie and Jack Eighner; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steven Eighner; one sister, Arlene; five brothers, Harlan, Bob, Ronald, Jimmy, and Earl; five sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

Jean worked as a hairdresser for many years. She enjoyed visiting with her clients and worked up into her 80’s. She was a member of the Rural Neighbor’s Club and the East Lynn United Methodist Church for over fifty years, where she was very active serving at the chicken pie suppers and ice cream socials. She later became a member of the Hoopeston United Methodist Church. Jean enjoyed knitting and loved to make dish rags and towels. She especially loved her family and enjoyed taking meals to them on the family farm.

A visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. Monday April 1, 2024, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home, with Pastor Kathy Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in East Lynn Cemetery in East Lynn, IL.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Jean to the Hoopeston United Methodist Church, 403 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL 60942.
