The first major golf tournament of the year did not disappoint as Spaniard Sergio Garcia won his first major tournament of his career at the Masters in Augusta, GA yesterday. Garcia was locked in a dual with Englishman Justin Rose all afternoon on Sunday as the pair surged ahead of the rest of the field and finished the 4th round tied at 9 under par. Both players had makeable birdie putts on the 18th green but neither could capitalize, sending the tournament back to the 18th tee box for a Sudden Death playoff hole. Rose then sent his tee shot into the trees on the right side on his way to a bogey, while Garcia sank his 10 foot birdie putt to capture the coveted green jacket. Former Illini golfer Thomas Pieters shot 5 under par for the week, finishing in a tie with Matt Kuchar for 4th place.
In Major League Baseball action, the Cubs offense came alive over the weekend, taking 2 out of 3 from the Milwaukee Brewers with a 7-4 victory yesterday. Jason Heyward collected 2 hits and 3 RBI to lead the offense, while Addison Russell had 2 hits and 2 RBI of his own. Starter Jake Arrieta collected his 2nd victory of the year after giving up just 3 earned runs on 3 hits while striking out 10 in his 7 innings on the mound. The Cubs will return home tonight at 7 to face off against the Dodgers and raise their World Series Championship Banner at Wrigley Field.
The Cardinals continued their slow start to the season, getting shut out 8-0 by the Reds in St Louis. Staff ace Carlos Martinez took the loss after giving up 5 earned runs in his 5 innings on the mound as the Reds took 2 out of 3 on the weekend. The Cardinals will now hit the road as they face off against the Nationals in Washington tonight at 6:05.
The White Sox lost to the Twins 4-1 yesterday, dropping 2 out of 3 to their rivals over the weekend. The southsiders scored their lone run of the day when Avi Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 8th inning. Jose Quintana took the loss despite having a solid game on the mound as he gave up just 2 earned runs while striking out 7 in his 6 plus innings. The Sox will have the night off tonight before traveling to Cleveland to take on the Indians tomorrow afternoon.
The Bulls playoff push comes down to the final two games of the season as they host the Magic in their first game tonight at 7 pm. The Bulls are currently tied with the Miami Heat for the 8th and final playoff spot in the east, but Chicago plays two of the worst teams in the league in the Orlando Magic and the Brooklyn Nets to finish out their regular season. Win both games tonight and Wednesday night and they will make the NBA’s Eastern Conference Playoffs.
Lastly, Jimmie Johnson took home the checkered flag in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Race at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday. Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, and Dale Earnhardt Jr rounded out the top 5 on the day. Ryan Blaney finished a disappointing 12th after leading 148 laps on the day. The Cup Series will take Easter weekend off before returning to action in two weeks at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN.
