Boy’s high school baseball regional play continues this afternoon with one game of local interest on the schedule as 5th seeded Hoopeston Area travels to Bloomington to take on 3rd seeded Bloomington Central Catholic. First pitch is set for 7:30 this evening.
Regional play also continued for girls’ softball teams yesterday with the Milford Bearcats season coming to an end after a 14-4 defeat at the hands of Tolono Unity high school. Brittney Bailey led the Bearcats with two hits and two RBI on the day as Milford finished their season with a 12-15 record. This afternoon’s schedule features 5th seeded Hoopeston Area hosting 3rd seeded Villa Grove, 3rd seeded Watseka hosting 8th seeded Clifton Central, and 7th seeded Bismarck Henning traveling to Georgetown Ridge Farm to take on the 4th seeded host school. First pitch is set for 4:30 in all three of those games.
In Major League Baseball action, the Cubs got back in the win column with a 9-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. The Cubs offense got home runs from Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo, Ian Happ, and Addison Russell in support of winning pitcher John Lackey. He gave up 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 3 in his 5 1/3 innings on the mound to collect his 4th win of the year. They will play game 2 in that series tonight at 7:05 with Kyle Hendricks taking the bump against Scott Feldman for the Reds.
The Cardinals were doubled up by the Red Sox 6-3 in St Louis last night. Lance Lynn took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 3 hits while walking 1 in his 6 innings on the mound. Dexter Fowler had an RBI double in the 3rd inning to lead the Redbird offense. Game 2 in that series is scheduled for 7 o’clock tonight with Mike Leake facing off against Rick Porcello in that one.
The White Sox dropped their second straight game to the Angels 7-6 in 11 innings in Anaheim last night. The southsiders scored 3 runs in the 9th inning to send the game to extras and plated a single run in the top of the 11th before Albert Pujols came through with a 2 run single in the bottom of the 11th to send the Angels to victory. Yolmer Sanchez and Tim Anderson each hit home runs to lead the White Sox offense while Todd Frazier pitched in with 2 RBI of his own. Closer David Robertson picked up his first loss of the year after giving up both runs in the bottom of the 11th inning. The southsiders will look to avoid the sweep tonight at 9:05 when Miguel Gonzalez takes the mound against Matt Shoemaker of the Angels.
The NBA’s Western Conference Finals continued last night with the Warriors blowing out the Spurs 136-100 to take a two games to none lead in that series. That series will now take a few days off before game 3 on Saturday night in San Antonio. Meanwhile, game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals will take place tonight at 7:30 in Cleveland when the Cavaliers host the Boston Celtics.
Lastly, game 3 of the NHL’s Western Conference finals took place in Nashville last night with the Predators defeating the Ducks 2-1 to take a two games to one lead in the series. Meanwhile, they will play game 3 in the Eastern Conference finals tonight in Ottawa where the Senators will host the Penguins in a 7 o’clock puck drop. That series is tied at 1 game apiece.
