In Major League Baseball action yesterday, the Cardinals blanked the Dodgers 2-0 to split their four game series at two games apiece. Starter Adam Wainwright did it all yesterday as he picked up the victory on the mound and knocked in both runs for the Redbirds on a two run home run in the second inning. The victory was Wainwright’s sixth on the year as he gave up just 4 hits and struck out 6 in his 6 innings on the mound. Closer Seung Hwan Oh picked up his 13th save on the season with a scoreless 9th inning. The Cardinals will now travel to Chicago to begin a big three game weekend series against the rival Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Cubs had the day off yesterday and will be looking to get back on track this weekend after going winless on their six game west coast swing. This afternoon’s game begins at 1:20 with John Lackey taking the mound for the northsiders against Lance Lynn of the Cardinals.

The White Sox also had the day off yesterday before traveling to Detroit for a three game weekend series against the Tigers beginning tonight at 6:10. The southsiders will send Derek Holland to the bump to take on Michael Fulmer of the Tigers.

The NBA Finals finally got underway last night in Oakland, California as the Golden State Warriors blew out the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-91 to take game 1 of the series. Kevin Durant led the Warriors with 38 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists while Steph Curry pitched in with 28 points and 10 assists of his own. They will now take a couple of days off before the Cavs look to even the series on Sunday evening at 7 o’clock in Oakland.

The NHL’s Stanley Cup Finals will also resume this weekend with game 3 taking place on Saturday night at 7 o’clock in Nashville. Pittsburgh leads the series two games to none over Nashville as they look to become the first team to win back to back Stanley Cups since the late 90’s.

Lastly, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is in Dover, Delaware this weekend for a 400 mile race at Dover International Speedway. The race is set to begin around noon on Sunday at the track where Matt Kenseth is the defending champion.

In Major League Baseball action, the Cubs slide continued yesterday as they lost to the Padres 2-1 in San Diego for their 6th loss in a row. Starter Jake Arrieta was solid on the mound as he gave up just the 1 earned run on 5 hits while striking out 7 in his 6 innings of work despite coming away with a no decision. Reliever Koji Uehara took the loss after giving up a single run in the bottom of the 8th inning on a fielder’s choice to second base. The offense did little to help the Cubs pitching staff as they managed just 3 hits on the day and were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position as Javy Baez drove in the lone run on an infield single in the 2nd inning. The northsiders will have the day off today before returning home to begin a three game weekend series against the rival St Louis Cardinals on Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals snapped the Dodgers 6 game winning streak with a 2-1 victory in St Louis last night. Dexter Fowler was the hero as he broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 8th inning with a solo home run to right center field to send starter Carlos Martinez home with a victory. Martinez was terrific on the night as he gave up just the 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 9 in his 8 innings of work to even his record at 4-4 on the year. Closer Seung Hwan Oh came on to pitch a scoreless 9th inning for his 12th save of the year. The Cards and Dodgers will conclude their 4 game series in St Louis this afternoon at 12:45 when Adam Wainwright takes the bump against Brandon McCarthy.

The Red Sox defeated the White Sox 4-1 at Guaranteed Rate field last night to take 2 out of 3 in their series. Reliever Anthony Swarzak took the loss after giving up all 4 runs in relief of starter Mike Pelfrey in the 6th inning. Tim Anderson was the lone offensive bright spot for the southsiders as he gave them an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the second inning. The Pale Hoes will have the day off today before traveling to Detroit to begin a three game weekend series against the Tigers on Friday night.

The NHL’s Stanley Cup Finals continued last night with the Penguins taking game two 4-1 in Pittsburgh. They now lead the series two games to none as the scene shifts to Nashville for game 3 on Saturday night at 7 o’clock.

Lastly, the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers finally begins tonight, nearly one week after the conference finals ended. Tip-off is set for 8 o’clock in Oakland in the rubber match between these two teams who have met in each of the last three NBA Finals. The Warriors won the championship in 2015, while the Cavs erased a 3-1 series deficit to win last year’s NBA Finals.
