Vermilion County Deputy Hospitalized after a Scott's Law Accident

WHAT: Traffic Crash with Injuries
WHERE: Interstate 74 westbound, 0.5 miles east of milepost 218
WHEN: January 26, 2020 at 6:50 a.m.
VEHICLES: Unit 1: 2009 silver Mercury Marquis
Unit 2: 2019 white Ford Explorer Police Interceptor
DRIVERS: Unit 1 – Violet L. James, 70, Knoxville, Tennessee
Unit 2 - Male, 37, Danville, Illinois (Vermilion County Sheriff’s Deputy)
PASSENGERS: Unit 1 - None
Unit 2 - None
PRELIMINARY: According to the preliminary investigation, Unit 2 was on the scene of a vehicle accident on I-74 in the westbound lanes. Unit 2 was stationary on the left shoulder and left lane with all emergency lights activated. Unit 1 was traveling westbound in the right lane when she attempted to change lanes from the right into the left lane. Unit 1 struck the rear of Unit 2 causing Unit 1 to run off the roadway to the left. Unit 2 was pushed off the roadway to the left and into the median cable.
TRANSPORTS: The driver of Unit 2 was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
SEATBELTS: Both the driver of Unit 1 and the driver of Unit 2 were properly restrained by a seatbelt.
CHARGES: The driver of Unit 1 was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and Scott’s Law (Move Over Law).
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
