George Robert Houmes, 79, of East Lynn

George Robert Houmes, 79, of East Lynn, passed away at 10:54 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, at Heritage Health, in Hoopeston.

George was born on October 4, 1942, in Logansport, Indiana, the son of Herschel Keith and Mary M. (Schuler) Houmes.  George didn’t have any biological children but was very good to his family and ten grandchildren.  He was especially fond of his nieces and nephews and “greats”- Nathan (Elizabeth) Alt of East Peoria, Illinois, Luke (Tove) Alt of Norway, Meredith (Josh) Bierbaum of Springfield, Illinois, Sarah (Jason) Soares of Falls River, Massachusetts and Tyler (Karen) Houmes of Athens, Pennsylvania; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

He married Dolee (Johnson) Barker in September of 2007, in Rossville, Illinois, who had two children- Darren (Mindee) Barker of Larkspur, Colorado and Dawn (Todd) Hicks of Paxton, Illinois.  She preceded him in death in November of 2007.  He later married Theresa Minnich on December 16, 2011, in Monticello, Illinois, who survives along with her children- Daniel (Linn) Newkirk of Columbia, Missouri and Sarah (Daren) Benson of Paxton, Illinois.

He is also survived by his sister- Loretta (Lawrence) Alt of East Lynn, Illinois; step-grandchildren- Alexis Barker, Samantha Barker, Koi Allen, Jaden Allen, Jonas Allen, Chloe Plummer, Van Plummer, Everett Benson, Alissa Jackson and Lindsey Ott; sister-in-law- Mary Houmes of Fall River, Massachusetts; special cousin- Jodi Cartwright and several other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife-Dolee Houmes and brother- Keith Houmes.

George graduated from East Lynn High School, in 1960. He was voted MVP of all sports at East Lynn High School, by his peers.  He later attended Thornton Community College. He worked at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, in Elk Grove, as the Director of Finance, until his retirement in 1993. He was one of only five certified managers of patient accounts in the Midwest. IN 1994, he purchased 12 acres of property next to his family’s home place, where he built a nice home and planted 200+ trees, shrubs and flowers.  He was very proud of his home.  Even though he was retired, he worked driving a truck for McLane for 10 years.  George was a retired Rotarian, where he spent 15 years.  He enjoyed landscaping, fishing, playing basketball and was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.

A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2022, at Blurton Funeral Home, in Hoopeston, with Pastor Steve Ingram officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home.  Burial will follow the service in East Lynn Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Hoopeston Public Library.  The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home to assist them in honoring George’s life.  Condolences may be shared with the family on his everlasting memorial page at:  www.BlurtonFuneralHomes.com.
