John E. Bray, 92, of Rossville

John E. Bray peacefully left this world to be with his beloved wife Dorothy “Dot” Kammin and son Timmy on June 2nd at 2:15 PM at Carle Foundation Hospital, in Urbana.

John was born in Nancy, Kentucky on September 13, 1929 to the late Roscoe and Rowena Emerson Bray.

John faithfully served his country as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army during the Korean War. One of his proudest accomplishments serving overseas was being a member of the Okinawa Island Championship Volleyball team. John proudly shared with his loved ones that his team went on to earn 3rd place in the final championship round out of 3 teams. He also prided himself on achieving the top shooting marksman on the island of Okinawa. He was very proud to serve as a Drill Sergeant during his years of service.  When John returned home, he married Dorothy on September 18, 1954 in Rossville, Illinois. John spent his entire life doing what he loved, farming. John used farming as a way to teach his children and grandchildren the values of hard-work and respect. When John wasn’t in the field, you could find him fishing, hunting with his beloved coon hounds, golfing with his grandchildren, bird watching with his wife, tending to over 200 tomato plants, or spending time sharing life advice and stories with his loved ones. John never missed an opportunity to support his children, grandchildren, and family at sporting or academic events. John is remembered by his loved ones for being a soft-spoken gentleman filled with respect and love for others, hard-working, a caretaker, role model, and most importantly an amazing husband, father, grandpa, uncle, brother, and friend. The memories of John’s stories, kindhearted personality, gleeful laugh, optimistic attitude, and his signature subtle wink continue to live on in the hearts of his loved ones.

John is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Kammin Bray, son Timothy Bray, parents Roscoe and Rowena Bray, brother and friend Paul Bray, sisters and brothers-in-laws Delores & Jack Love, Euna & Robert Foster, and Martha Johnson. John is survived by his sons John (Sandy) Bray of Hoopeston, Mike (Tina) Bray of Rossville, daughter Beth Ann (Curt) Knecht of Hoopeston, and daughter in-law Jane (JD) Bray Comrie of Texas.
