Rev. Karen L. Evans, 78, of Hoopeston

Rev. Karen Lee Evans, 78, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 7:24 P.M. Wednesday August 31, 2022, at her home. She was born December 11, 1943, at Camp Taylor in Louisville, KY, the daughter of Rev. Walter P. Evans Jr. and Rev. Gertrude (Collins) Evans.  

She is survived by two sisters, Rev. Dr. Juanita Evans Leonard of Indianapolis, IN and Naomi Evans Baker of Fishers, IN; one nephew, Jeremy N. Baker of Fishers, IN; two nieces, Jennifer R. (Paul) McCain of Indianapolis, IN, and Martha Joy (Brian) Davis of Findlay, OH; five great-nieces and nephews, Noah, Brennen, Anna, and Autumn Davis, and Charles McCain; a special friend, Alice Fink; and former brother-in-law, David Baker of Muncie, IN. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Sadie B. Evans; and one brother-in-law, L. Samuel Leonard. 

Karen was a teacher and later became the principal at Wheelers Home Farm School in Riley, IL, where she also served on the Board of Directors for the Wheeler Foundation. She was a past Girl Scout leader, and member of the Hoopeston Hobby Club, the Christian Women’s Connection, and English and Drama Fraternities of Anderson College University. She was also a member of the Danville Light Opera, the Hoopeston Play Crafters, and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. 

Karen was an ordained clergy woman and served as a missionary to Japan for the Church of God, Anderson, IN. She was a member of the First Church of God in Hoopeston where she was also a Sunday school teacher. 

A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 A.M Saturday September 17, 2022, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday September 17th, at the funeral home with Pastor Carlos Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston. 

Memorials may be made to Iroquois Memorial Hospice 200 Laird Lane, Watseka, IL 60970 or the First Church of God, 1001 E. Orange St. Hoopeston, IL 60942 for the Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Christmas Program.
