Helen May Burton, 82, of Armstrong

Helen May Burton, 82, of Armstrong, passed away at 12:52 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2022, at her home.

Helen was born on February 28, 1940, in Armstrong, Illinois, the daughter of Milton and Cora May (Baker) Wernigk.  She married Winfred Burton on September 4, 1959, at the Potomac Church of Christ.  He preceded her in death on April 26, 2015.

She is survived by three children- David (Anne) Burton of Armstrong, Scott (Tammy) Burton of Fithian and Janet (Anthony) Cameron of Lincoln, Illinois; ten grandchildren- Christine, Jason, Lauren, Kevin, Alex, Amy, Abigail, Nicholas, Hannah and Emma; 26 great-grandchildren- Kendra, Aiden, Avery, Dalton, Brianna, Cheyenne, Kennedi, Morgan, Brylee, Audrey, Evelyn, Isabel, Owen, Corbin, Braelyn, Acelyn, Alaina, Cameron, Weston, Farrah, Hunter, Owen and Luca; one brother- Bill (Pat) Wernigk of Penfield; two sisters- Louise (Chuck) Sweet of Hoopeston and Alice New of Danville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers- Marvin, Jim and Thomas Wernigk and brother-in-law- Mark New.

Helen graduated from Armstrong High School, in 1958.  She worked for 20 years at G.E., in Danville, until they closed.  She later helped run Burton’s Café, in Potomac, with Winfred.  She later graduated from Danville Area Community College and became a medical transcriptionist at Provena Covenant Medical Center, in Urbana.  Helen was also known for her pie baking and operated Helen’s Pie’s for over 10 years, until 2019, baking pies for area schools, churches, and weddings.  Her largest order was 120 pies for the I and I Antique Tractor Show.  She was known for her coconut cream pies.  Helen enjoyed cooking, baking, reading and finding new recipes.  Helen was a member of Crossroads Christian Church, in Danville.  Helen loved her grandchildren and enjoyed being with all of them during the holidays.  Winfred and Helen had many happy years together.  They loved cooking, dancing and most of all family.

A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 25, 2022, at Blurton Funeral Home, in Potomac, with Pastor Miles Clark officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.  Burial will follow the service in Partlow Cemetery.   Memorials may be made in her name to the Crossroads Christian Church Building Fund.  The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home to assist them in honoring Helen’s life.  Memories or photos may be shared with the family on her memorial page at:  www.blurtonfuneralhomes.com.
