John Michael Shelton, 80, of Mahomet, passed away at 6:18 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center, in Urbana.
John was born on October 7, 1943, in Champaign, the son of John and Marjorie Marie (Williamson) Shelton. He was married to Evelyn Downing, his beloved best friend and wife for 46 years, until she passed away in 2015. John has been lost ever since without her and now they are joined together again. Together they raised five girls.
He is survived by four daughters- Rhonda (Rick) Covington of Mahomet, Pam McWethy of Fairfield, Becky McWethy of Savoy and Lila (Tim) Weber of Tolono; son-in-law- Richard Brown of Mahomet; eight grandchildren- Michael McWethy, Richard (Leslie) Covington, Michele (Lael) Weber, Jeremy Davis, Joshua Davis, Mariah (Joe) Isbell, Matthew Morrissey and Jason Harris; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and one brother- Dennis Shelton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter-Cathy McWethy, brother- Larry Shelton and sister- Sandy Clem.
John graduated from Homer High School and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He previously worked at Lincoln Lodge, Meadow Gold Milk and he spent over 30 years at Urbana Sanitary District, until his retirement. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, playing slot machines, and traveling.
According to his wishes cremation rites will be arranged. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Blue Ridge Cemetery, in Mansfield.
