Jean Means Glass was born on July 15, 1936 in Pacific, Missouri, and passed away on June 19, 2024 in Paxton, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Katherine Means (McElhaney); her six brothers and sisters, George, Joseph, Annina, Weese, Harold, and James; and her husband, Ronald Glass. She is survived by her daughters, Kim O’Brien (Lewis), Lori Hendricks (Thomas), and her son, Christopher Miller (Debra), as well as her grandchildren, Laura, Steven, Andrew, Jessica, Elise, and Audrey, and her great-grandchildren, Andrew, Sophia, Jackson, and Saint. And, she was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
As a youngster in Hoopeston, she was a cheerleader at Honeywell Grade School, detasseled corn in high school, and worked at Murphy’s Five & Ten Cent store. As an adult, she worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Hardy, as a secretary for John Greer Junior High, and as a secretary at the FMC Corporation. Later, she worked as a secretary at the University of Illinois, was a Certified Nursing Assistant at the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, Illinois, a VISTA volunteer (the domestic Peace Corps), and became the assistant director of the Caring Corps in Mesa, Arizona. She was a member of the Urbana Assembly of God in Urbana, Illinois, the Meadowbrook Assembly of God in Champaign, the United Methodist Church in Belleview, Florida, and the East University Church of God in Mesa, Arizona. She gave her heart to Jesus when she was 10, a decision she called “the best I ever made.” Jean was born to be a mother and a grandmother. She was a lighthouse of wisdom and hope, and a warm blanket of compassion, tenderness, and unconditional love. The homes she created were always a cocoon of kindness, where all were welcomed with a hug, a glowing grin, and a sumptuous sugar bin of chocolate from Grandma’s cabinet. Hers was a heart of hope, generosity, grace, and light. When the doors of life darkened, she shined reassuring beams of caring comfort for others. She always pointed out the “angel light” that pierced through a sky bruised with clouds…and she was that heavenly angel light for all of us.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
