Steven Kent Scharlach, 80, of Carbondale, IL, passed away at 7:10 P.M. Monday August 5, 2024, at his home. He was born May 31, 1944, in Pekin, IL, the son of Harry R. and Mildred (Boswell) Scharlach. They preceded him in death. He married Ellen Cox and together they had two children who survive, Tamara Scharlach of Carbondale, IL and Tim (Denise) Scharlach of Hoopeston, IL.
He is also survived by one sister, Sharon (Paul) Martin of Normal, IL; one brother, Bob (Cheryl) Scharlach of Prescott, AZ; five grandchildren, Terra (Ben) Kinney, Asti (Ethan) Larkin, Zachary Beavers, and Avery and Haleigh Scharlach; three great-grandchildren, Ellie Kinney, Wrinley Larkin, and Grayson Beavers; and several nieces and nephews.
Steve worked at General Motors in Tilton. He then worked as an underground coal mine electrician and later became a civilian instructor in aircraft electronics. He served in the United States Air Force from 1962-1966. Steve enjoyed receiving and decoding morse code and going hunting and fishing.
A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Micah Mobley officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watseka, IL. Military rites will be accorded by the Hoopeston American Legion Post #384.
