Vermilion County Covid 19 update 9/16/2020

Update on Cases

Today, we have 32 new cases and 12 have been released.   We have a total of 90 active cases, with 87 at home in isolation and 3 hospitalized (one of our releases today was from the hospital).   None of our new cases are hospitalized.  We have 2 cases that are preschool aged, 2 cases in their teens, 8 cases in their 20s, 2 in their 30s,  2 in their 40s, 9 in their 50s, 5 in their 70s, and 2 in their 80s.  Multiple connections through marriage, households, work related, and small outings with friends/family.  2 traveled out of state.

We are not headed in a very good direction and this is a cause for concern.  I think it is very important to stress to the community how imperative it is to follow the social distancing, capacity limits and masking guidelines.  Through carelessness and cavalier attitudes, we are seeing schools, small businesses and restaurants having to close for 14 days to quarantine staff and students because people refuse to follow or enforce the guidance.  I know the schools are working tirelessly day and night to keep the children of this community safe and we have to help them.  Unfortunately, we cannot force people to care about others and we cannot watch over every establishment or person.   The warm weather is coming to a close soon and with that, we will see a greater risk of transmission.  Please remember that about 50% of our population here in Vermilion County have underlying health conditions and that’s probably on the very low end.   Enforcement has to come at all levels if we plan on getting control.   The last three days alone puts us well over 50 new cases per 100,000 that sets the stage for us staying in the warning area.

  • If you are a close contact (less than 6 feet, more than 15 minutes cumulative) you MUST quarantine for 14 days.  This is still not being understood or enforced by many.
  • Staff and employees MUST wear a mask (over their nose and mouth) when indoors UNLESS they can be 6 feet apart from each other (examples include being in their own office area).
