Loda man, 22, jailed in shooting of man, 19

A 22-year-old was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with an early-morning shooting in Loda that left a 19-year-old hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head.

Colton M. Johnson of Loda was arrested Wednesday evening on the Class 1 felony charge and remained Thursday evening at the county jail in Watseka, according to the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office.

Bond was set Thursday at $25,000, meaning Johnson would need to pay $2,500 to be released.

The male gunshot victim, whose name was not immediately released, remained in critical condition at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, a news release from the sheriff’s office said.

According to the news release, the shooting occurred at a residence in Loda early Wednesday morning. A 911 call was made from the residence asking for an ambulance for a person who was bleeding from the head, the release said.

Upon paramedics’ arrival, it was discovered the person had suffered a gunshot wound, and the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition, the release said.

The shooting remained under investigation by the sheriff’s office and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit.

“This is an isolated incident,” the release said, “and there is no threat to the community.”
