WHAT: Two Vehicle Fatal Traffic Crash WHERE: Interstate 74 eastbound near Milepost 202, near Oakwood, IL, Vermilion County WHEN: May 6, 2023 at approximately 9:15 p.m. VEHICLES: Unit 1- 2008 Black Harley-Davidson motorcycle Unit 2- 2017 Blue Ford Escape DRIVERS: Unit 1- Jacob Lovell, 24-year-old male from Danville, IL – Deceased Unit 2- Virginia Salazar-Castillo, 56-year-old female from Danville, IL – Uninjured PRELIMINARY: The preliminary investigation indicates the following: Unit 1 was traveling east on Interstate 74 near milepost 202 when it struck a pothole in the right lane, lost control, and the driver was ejected off the motorcycle and onto the roadway. Unit 2 was also traveling in the right lane behind Unit 1 with an unknown car between Units 1 and 2. The vehicle in front of Unit 2 swerved left to avoid striking Unit 1, but the driver of Unit 2 could not see Unit 1 driver in the roadway until it was too late. Unit 2 struck the driver of Unit 1. The driver of Unit 1 was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver of Unit 2 was uninjured. The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours for the crash investigation. No further information is available.
