20-Year-Old Ineligible for FOID Gets 5 Years in Prison for Gun Possession
On June 21, 2024 Jayuonta Cunningham (DOB: 5/29/2004), formerly of Danville, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Possession of a Firearm Without a Firearm Owners Identification Card-Not Eligible, a class 3 felony. Cunningham was sentenced to 5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Upon release from prison, Cunningham will serve 6 months of mandatory supervised release. Judge Mark Goodwin heard evidence that on March 12, 2024 around 1:30 A.M., Danville Police Officers responded to a call for shots fired at 224 Tennessee in Danville. Initial reports suggested that a drive by shooting targeting the residence at 224 Tennessee had occurred. Upon further investigation, physical evidence showed that shots had instead been fired from the residence of 224 Tennessee. After a search of the residence officers located two firearms in Cunningham’s dresser. Officers confirmed that Cunningham did not have a valid FOID and due to his criminal history, was not eligible to be issued a FOID. State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy thanked the Danville Police Department for their thorough investigation and their efforts in assisting her office in holding repeat offenders accountable.
