The Newton County sheriff's deputy who was critically injured after being shot in the line of duty will not survive his injuries. 

"Despite the tremendous and heroic efforts of his medical team, we have been informed Corporal Brandon Schreiber will not survive his injuries," Sheriff Cothran said in an update. 

Corporal Schreiber is an organ donor and his sacrifice will present the opportunity for him to help many other people.

Newton County Sheriff’s Office said further details will be provided later this week.
