Repeat Offender Sentenced to 10 Years for Armed Robbery & Unlawful Use of Firearm
On May 22, 2025, Jalen Coe (DOB: 4/15/2003), formerly of Danville, Illinois, pleaded guilty in two separate cases to Armed Robbery, a class X felony, and to Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a class 4 felony for a sentence of 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Following his term of imprisonment, Coe will serve 18 months of mandatory supervised release. The plea and sentencing were presided over by Judge Karen Wall. The People presented evidence that on January 2, 2024, Danville Police were dispatched to East Robinson Street from a moving vehicle. Police stopped the car, and the victim got out. At this point, the suspect moved into the driver’s seat and fled from police, but eventually crashed the car. Police were able to identify Jalen Coe as the driver. Coe fled the scene of the crash on foot. Police searched the vehicle after the crash and located a machine gun on the passenger side. During the investigation, the victim stated that after a text exchange, he agreed to bring money and cannabis to a residence on Robinson Street. Once the victim arrived inside the residence, Jalen Coe appeared from another room with a firearm, threatened the victim and robbed the victim of United States currency. Coe forced the victim into his own vehicle, and forced the victim to drive him around to look for an ATM to get more money. At some point the victim was able to call 911 and left the line open, leading police to their location. The People also presented evidence that on October 21, 2021, Danville Police responded to the area of Fowler Street for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers saw two individuals who matched the description of the suspects, one of them being Jalen Coe, and stopped them for questioning. As police attempted to pat down the suspects, Coe fled on foot despite officer’s commands to stop but was eventually apprehended. Located near Coe was a loaded handgun. DNA swabs were collected from Coe and the gun. Testing by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab confirmed Coe had possessed the firearm. State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said, “This sentence sends a clear message that violent crime results in serious consequences. I commend the Danville Police Department for bringing this repeat offender to justice and for protecting the good People of Vermilion County from armed violence.”
