City of Danville & IDOT working on Route one years old problem

Since 2021, the City of Danville has been working with the Illinois
Department of Transportation (IDOT) and commercial businesses to identify solutions that
improve safety and reduce the risk of high-severity crashes at the commercial entrance, south of
the Meijer gas station, along the east side of Illinois Route 1.
As part of the evaluation process, traffic safety information, logistical impacts, and long-term
infrastructure asset management costs were reviewed and considered. The recommended
solution for the location is to restrict this commercial entrance to a right-in, right-out only access.
The planned improvement will modify traffic movements by restricting certain turning
movements and improving access management along Illinois Route 1. The raised median
alternative provides a long-term, cost-effective approach with minimal logistical concerns to
improve safety by reducing the potential for future high-severity crashes that have been
historically prevalent at this location.
IDOT is tentatively planning to begin constructing the proposed improvements starting on
Monday, August 31, 2026 and expect construction to be competed within 2 to 3 weeks.
"The safety of our residents and visitors remains a top priority," said Rickey Williams, Jr.,
Mayor of Danville. "Although this resolution has taken longer than anticipated, we are anxious
for the project to start and to limit traffic incidents in this area”
