Robert E. Spain Sr., 86, of Potomac

Robert E. Spain Sr., 86, of Potomac, passed away October 29, 2020, at Union Hospital, in Terre Haute, following a brief battle with Covid-19.


Bob was born in Potomac, Illinois, on December 5, 1933, the son of Jess and Dora (Hoskins) Spain.  Bob married Leah Ruth Cox, on April 14, 1952, in Hoopeston.  She preceded him in death on May 1, 1983.  They had three children- Robert E. (Peggy Pringle) Spain Jr., Karen (Paul) Gillespie and Thomas J. (Tina McCoy) Spain.  Bob also had 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter-Karen Gillespie and friend-Carol Newman.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2020, at Blurton Funeral Home, in Potomac. 

 

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2020, at Potomac Cemetery, with Pastor George Desmond officiating.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Potomac American Legion. 

 

Masks and social distancing will be enforced during the visitation hours due to the current health concerns.

Carla Lynn Westfall, 54, of Paxton, formerly of Urbana and Cissna Park

Carla Lynn Westfall, 54, of Paxton, formerly of Urbana and Cissna Park, passed away at 9:35 A.M. Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Accolade Healthcare in Paxton.  She was born June 26, 1966 in Danville, the daughter of Donald Westfall and Janet (McMurray) Westfall.   

 

Survivors include her mother, Janet, of Savoy; one brother, Michael Westfall, of Chicago; and several cousins.   

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald, and her grandparents.   


Carla was a member of the Mattis Avenue Free Methodist Church in Champaign.  She loved music.  During her school years she played the flute, piano, and organ.  She enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts and other music performances.  She collected Precious Moments figurines and would often join her mom in doing embroidering and other arts and crafts projects. Beginning in her late teens Carla struggled with a succession of health setbacks.  But she was a fighter.  One of her proudest accomplishments, after intensive physical and occupational therapy, was being able to move out of her parents’ home and into her own apartment, where she lived independently for several years.   


Cremation rites have been accorded, and a graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday June 26, 2021 at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.

Paul A. Yohnka, 76, of Clifton, IL

Paul A. Yohnka, 76, of Clifton, IL passed away on Monday, October 26th at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

 

A private family service will be held on Saturday, October 31st. 

 

A public visitation will take place the previous day, Friday, October 30th from 6-8pm at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton.

Artie "Peg" Wyss, 91, formerly of Cissna Park, IL

Artie "Peg" Wyss, 91, formerly of Cissna Park, IL, passed away on Tuesday October 6, 2020, at the Alta Vista Senior Living Community in Prescott, AZ.  She was born October 12, 1928, in

 Hoopeston, IL, the daughter of Curtis and Ipha Brown.  She married Jacob "Jack" Wyss in Cissna Park, IL, in 1948 and he preceded her in death in 2000.  Peg also grieved the loss of a daughter, 

Janice Cunningham (Wyss) in 2002.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Lana (Glenn) Sinn of Prescott, AZ; grandchildren, Andrew Sinn and Adam Sinn; and nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband and daughter Janice, she 

was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret; and brothers, Curtis, Robert, Dale, Darrel, Roy, and Bill.

 

After graduating from Hoopeston high school, Peg worked various jobs and became a homemaker.  For many years she managed the lunch counter at the Livestock Sales Barn in Cissna Park   bringing joy and delivering porkburgers, sodas, and hostess pies to countless folks with a joke or a smile.  She enjoyed spending time with her niece Lisa and friends at Parkview (5thStreet

 House).  Peg and Jack moved to The Villages, FL, for retirement.  Peg enjoyed 13 years of bowling, dancing, golfing, and making additional friends.  Sherelocated to Prescott, AZ to be closer 

to her daughter, Lana, during her final years.  Peg lived long enough to see her Chicago Cubbies win the WorldSeries.  What she appreciated the most was spending her time with friends and family being social.


Peg’s family would like to thank the caretaker and hospice staff at Alta Vista for the respectful, kind care that they helped the family provide Peg, especially those who were with her during her

 final time.  Specifically, thank you to Michelle, Amanda, and Judy for their loving care of Peg. 

Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.  A private graveside service will be held at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Cissna Park, IL.  A public visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 P.M.

Anita Gagnon, 86, of Rossville

Anita Faye Gagnon, 86, of Rossville, IL, passed away at 9:30 A.M. Saturday October 24, 2020 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston.  She was born September 14, 1934 in Burnetta, KY, the daughter of James and Lucy (Colyer) Burton.  She married Don Gagnon on May 25, 1956, in Hoopeston.  He preceded her in death.   

She is survived by one daughter, Tammy (Eric) Roberts of Rossville, IL; one son, Rick Gagnon of Hoopeston, IL; two sisters, Louetta Williamson of Lafayette, IN and Jewell Ladd of Mount Pleasant, TN; four grandchildren, Angel (Billy) Trumann, April Gagnon, Brandon (Tori) Roberts, and Brooke (Jared) Mason; 9 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; 10 great-great-grandchildren plus one on the way; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; one infant son; and four siblings, Donald Burton, Juanita Steinwagner, Hettie Cornelius, and Roy Burton. 

Anita worked at the Department of Children and Family Services as a caseworker, until her retirement.  She attended the Rossville Church of Christ and was a member of the Rossville American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.  Through the years, Anita enjoyed playing Pinochle and Yahtzee, bowling, dancing, and golfing.  She also loved to travel and plan social events at Hubbard Trail Country Club. 

A private funeral service will be held.  A public graveside service will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday October 31, 2020 at Rossville Cemetery in Rossville, IL.

Iris Wagoner, 88, of Rossville

Iris Anne Wagoner, 88, of Rossville, IL, passed away at 5:55 A.M. Saturday October 24, 2020 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.  She was born December 20, 1931 in Rossville, the daughter of Henry Clay and Goldie Ellen (Hughes) Ellis.  She married L. George Wagoner on July 24, 1949, in Rossville.  He preceded her in death. 

She is survived by one daughter, Cathy (Harry) Walker of Paris, IL; one son, Jeff (Marsha) Wagoner of Williamsport, IN; 4 grandchildren, Naomi (Josh) Gross, Steve (Angie) Wagoner, Deborah (Jeffrey) Berlier, and Stacey Wagoner; 8 great-grandchildren, Victor (Kaylin) Walker, Emalie (Morgan) Mitchell, Caitlyn Wagoner, Kylie, John, and Luke Knutson, and Luke and Leila Berlier; one great-great-grandchild, James Walker; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Chris; and one brother and sister-in-law, Harmon and Irene Ellis. 

Iris worked at multiple manufacturing businesses including General Electric and Gulbranson.  She co-owned The Cut - Up Shop in Rossville from 1984 – 1995.  She was also a seamstress and enjoyed doing alterations for people.  Iris was a member of the Rossville Church of Christ.  She served as a volunteer at the Hoopeston Multi Agency and the Rossville Historical Society.  In addition to sewing, her hobbies included gardening and genealogy. 

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday October 30, 2020 at Rossville Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Purdy officiating.

Joseph F. Bulington, 82, of Sheldon passed away on Wed. 10/21/2020 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. 

 

A Funeral Service is set for Monday, 10/26/2020 at 2:30pm at Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka with a visitation prior to the funeral starting at 12:00pm.

 

Burial will follow the service at the Sheldon Cemetery.

William "Bill" Sanders, 79, of Dekalb, formerly of Cissna Park, passed away on Oct. 21st at his home. 

 

A visitation is set for Tuesday, 10/27/2020 at Knapp Funeral Home in Cissna Park from 4-7p.m. 

 

A burial will take place Wed. 10/28/2020 at the Cissna Park Cemetery starting at 11:00am.

Gael Neathery, 92, of Hoopeston

Gael Edward Neathery, 92, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 6:28 P.M. Monday October 19, 2020 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston.  He was born January 11, 1928, in Albany, KY, the son of Edward and Pernie (Thomas) Neathery.  He married Donna Lyons on September 18, 1955 at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Hoopeston.  She preceded him in death on January 10, 2004. 

He is survived by two daughters, Jane Jenner of Vista, CA and Susan (William) Kachele of San Marcos, CA; one son, Gael E. “Eddie” (Jaime) Neathery II of Hoopeston, IL; brother, Lynn (Linda) Neathery of AZ; sister-in-law, Ruth Neathery of Hoopeston, IL; 8 grandchildren, Kyle Alt, Alisa Dutro, Elliott & Dakota Jenner, Kainon Kachele, and Alston, Reilly, and Traes Neathery; 6 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife, Gael was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Melia Alt; one sister and brother-in-law, Pat (George) Meyers; and one brother, Jack Neathery. 

Gael was a lifelong farmer, farming for 60 years.  He served in the United States Army from 1950 – 1952.  He was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Hoopeston.  Gael’s greatest enjoyment was the farm especially caring for his yard and farmstead. 

A visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. Monday October 26, 2020 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL.  We kindly ask that face coverings be worn, and social distancing is maintained by those who attend.  A private funeral and burial will be held with military rites being accorded by the Hoopeston American Legion Post #384.

Mary E. Peters, 96, of Hoopeston

Mary E. Peters, 96, of Hoopeston, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2020, at Heritage Health, in Hoopeston.

 

Mary was born on August 25, 1924, in Hoopeston, the daughter of Ed and Virginia (McCormick) Sheets. She married Forest “Pete” Peters on August 3, 1942, in Missouri. He survives.

 

She is also survived by one daughter- Jennie (Don) Johnson of Aledo, Illinois; two sons- John Peters of Brownsville, Texas and Joe Peters of Hoopeston, Illinois; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.

 

Mary graduated from Hoopeston High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for several years at Cook Business Forms, until her retirement. She was a member of the Hoopeston Church of Christ. Mary enjoyed cooking, going to ballgames, gardening, and spending time with her family.

 

According to Mary’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded and there are not any services

scheduled at this time.

 

The family has entrusted Blurton Funeral Home, in Hoopeston, to assist them in honoring Mary’s life.

Joseph "Joe" V. Mathy, 68, of Chebanse

Joseph “Joe” V. Mathy, 68, of Chebanse passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Manteno. He was born July 27, 1952 in Clifton, the son of LaVerne and Zeah (Hawkins) Mathy and they preceded him in death in addition to one sister, Claudia Schmidt; father-in-law, Howard Meyer; and brother-in-law, Jim Meyer.

He married Jeanne Meyer on June 3, 1972 in Chebanse and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Jason (Michelle) Mathy of Chebanse; one daughter, Jennifer (Adam) McMullen of Streator; three sisters, Elia (Kelly) Hunt of Coatsville, IN, Terri Hindman of Kankakee and Pally Fehrenbacher of Clifton; brother-in-law, Roy Schmidt of Clifton; sister-in-law, Adele Meyer of Hermitage, TN; mother-in-law, Melba Meyer of Chebanse; and six grandchildren, Andie, Kaylee, Brooke, Anna, Charli and Wyatt.

Joe served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Chebanse American Legion Post #408. He was a police officer in Bourbonnais and Chebanse and then later was the Iroquois County Sherriff for 21 years. After retiring from the Sherriff’s Dept., he was the warden at the Dwight and Pontiac prisons and later was the safety coordinator at Iroquois Paving Corp. He was the former president of the Illinois Sherriff’s Association. Joe attended Zion Lutheran Church in Chebanse and enjoyed golfing, boating, reading, jogging, walking, and taking road trips with his wife.

Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 pm on Monday, October 19, 2020 at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton. Private services will be held with Rev. Keene Whybrew officiating.

Aaron Christian Reed, 26, of Onarga

Aaron Christian Reed, 26, of Onarga passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 in Loda. He was born March 2, 1994 in Kankakee, the son of Robert and Amy (Kaeding) Reed.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Amy Reed of Onarga; one brother, Adam Reed of Onarga; maternal grandparents, Jon and Ruddieann Kaeding of Onarga; paternal grandparents, Russell and Lyla Reed of Paxton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an uncle, Stuart Kaeding.

Aaron was a 2012 graduate of Iroquois West High School. He was passionate about his job at IL Crop Improvement Association in Champaign and about cars. He collected knives, loved fishing, and cherished his close friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 16, 2020 at the Onarga Cemetery. Rev. Brian King will officiate. Casual attire is requested.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Sheila M. Walter, 63, of Rossville, IL, formerly of Hoopeston

Sheila M. Walter, 63, of Rossville, IL, formerly of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 4:25 P.M. Tuesday October 13, 2020 at her home.  She was born February 10, 1957, in Jamestown, TN, the daughter of Cordell and Willadean (Clayburn) Koger.  She married Dean Walter on January 26, 1980 at their home in Hoopeston, IL.  He survives in Rossville, IL. 

She is also survived by two daughters, Telisa Walter of New York City, NY and Jamie (August) Christhilf of Champaign, IL; two sisters, Diane (Russ) Coulter of Gibson City, IL and Margaret (Bill) King of Bloomington, IL; one brother, JR (Teri) Koger of Whiteland, IL; one sister-in-law Sharon Koger of Virginia Beach, VA; 5 grandchildren, August, Philip, Camille, Leo, and Mark Christhilf; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Koger. 

Sheila worked at Howard Industries for 19 years and later worked at DACC for 20 years until her retirement.  She attended the Chestnut Street Church of Christ in Hoopeston where she was very active.  She enjoyed working in her flower garden and her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. 

A visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. -12:00 P.M. Monday October 19, 2020 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL.  A private funeral service will be held followed by a public graveside service at 1:45 P.M. Monday at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston, with Pastor John Morris and Rev. Edward "Ed" Jemar, 74, of Clifton, IL

Edward "Ed" Jemar, 74, of Clifton, IL passed away on Tuesday, 10/13/2020 at Anita Health St. Marys Hospital in Kankakee.

 

A private funeral service will be held at St. Peters Catholic Church in Clifton. Private burial to follow the service at the St. Peters Catholic Cemetery in Clifton. 

 

A visitation is set for Thursday, October 15th, 2020 from 4-8p.m. at Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton.

Gary S. Barnlund, 74, of Hudson, IL formerly of Donovan

Gary S. Barnlund, 74, of Hudson and formerly of Donovan passed away on Monday, October 12, 2020 at Bickford of Bloomington in Bloomington, IL.

 

Gary was born May 21, 1946 in Watseka, the son of Maurice and Emilie (Winslow) Barnlund and they preceded him in death along with his step-father, Fabien Lareau and one sister, Sharon Conrad.

 

He married Anna Fulton on September 22, 1973 in Bourbonnais and she survives.

 

Besides his wife, Anna Barnlund of Hudson, he is survived by two sons, Erik Barnlund of Hudson and Kris (Colleen) Barnlund of Normal; five grandchildren, Kaylor, Ashlyn, Rowen, Shay, and Hana; one brother-in-law, Richard Conrad of Donovan; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

 

Mr. Barnlund was a heavy equipment operator within the Terre Haute Local Union. He was Highway Commissioner for Beaver Twp. for 37 years, a member of the Beaver Fire Dept., where he served as fire chief for a period of time. Gary was quite the collector of Wheel Horse tractors and was a woodworker and wood turner, and was well known in the area for turning and selling pens. His biggest claim to fame was that the hosts of American Pickers “picked” his garage. He loved to ride his Gold Wing motorcycle, was a big fan of John Force and his daughters with NHRA, and was also an avid fan of Maxlider Brothers. His quick wit is something that will always be remembered.

 

An outside visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Beaverville on Saturday, October 17, 2020 from 10:30 a.m. until the 12:00 p.m. funeral service.

 

Memorials may be made to the Beaver Fire District.

John David "Dave" Cass Prather, 70, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Rossville

John David “Dave” Cass Prather of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Rossville, IL, passed away Thursday August 6, 2020 at his home.   Dave was born in Danville, IL on February 9, 1950 to John Douglas Prather and Georgia Cass Prather.   Dave is survived by a nephew, Charles (Chuckie) Landers and a niece, Cassandra  Dawn  (Landers)  Paris.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marsha Prather and brother, James (Jim)  Prather.  Dave grew up in Rossville, IL and graduated from Rossville-Alvin High School in 1968.  He was a champion go?kart driver in his youth and  operated  Prather  Hi?Performance  racing  shop  at  Prather  Garage  in  Rossville.   He attended Danville Area Community College before moving to Springfield in the mid 1970’s to work for the Illinois Department of Revenue as an appraisal specialist.   After 12 years at the Department of Revenue, Dave left to open Property Tax Services of Illinois, Inc., a consulting business that specialized in assisting owners of over?taxed commercial and industrial properties in obtaining fair tax assessments.    He moved to Las Vegas in 1996, operating the business remotely until his retirement in 2017.     

Cremation rites have been accorded and a graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday October 16, 2020 at Rossville Cemetery in Rossville, IL.

Robert "Bob" Wayne Strawser, 88, of Rossville

Robert “Bob” Wayne Strawser, 88, of Rossville, IL, passed away at 1:40 A.M. Tuesday October 13, 2020 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston.  He was born November 26, 1931, in Ross Township, IL, the son of Daniel Earl and Pauline Evangeline (Carrier) Strawser.  He married Norma Jean Isley on December 26, 1953 at the Church of Christ in Bismarck, IL and together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage.  She preceded him in death on January 4, 2015. 

He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Daulton of Lafayette, IN; three sons, Gary (Lee Ann) Strawser of Hoopeston, IL, Larry Strawser of Peoria, AZ, and Jerry Strawser of Clyde, TX; two sisters, Ruth (Howard) Brazel of Rossville, IL and Cathy (Robert) Simpson of Hoopeston, IL; 5 grandchildren, Amos Daulton, Heidi Goble, Susan Goble, Sara Garcia, and Kayla Strawser; 15 great-grandchildren, Payton and Emma Daulton, Libbie, Annabelle, and Madalyn Goble, Shania, Kayla, and Seth Goble, Matalyn, Haley, Lucas, Joshua Garcia, Skylyn Chatman, and Korbin Rasmus; one great-great-granddaughter, Meela Mae Hall; and 18 nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Linda Goodrum and Martha Bell; two brothers, Charles and Richard; and son-in-law, Terry Daulton. 

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday October 16, 2020 at Rossville Cemetery in Rossville, IL, with Rev. Gary Milton officiating.

Euna Bray Foster, 85, of Rossville

Euna Bray Foster, 85, of Rossville, IL, passed away at 7:12 A.M. Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston, IL. Euna was known to many as Mamm or Boone. She was born on December 27, 1934, in Nancy, KY, the daughter of Roscoe & Roenia (Emerson) Bray. She married Robert Gene Foster on September 18, 1954, in Rossville, IL. 

She is survived by one daughter, Bobbi (Cordie) Phillips of Rossville, two sons, Joe Foster of Alvin and Tom (Susan) Foster of Bellflower; grandchildren, John (Becky) Kinnett, Guy (Jennifer) Foster, Tony (Chelsea) Foster, Tee Billings, Kayla Foster, Logan Foster and Hayden Foster; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Garet, and Blake Kinnett and Eli and Asher Foster; and two great-great grandchildren, Landon and Kendal Kemp.  She is also survived by one brother, John E. Bray of Rossville and many nieces and nephews. 


She was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Papp” Foster; her parents; one brother, Paul Bray and two sisters, Martha and Delores.

 Euna was a homemaker most of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family, but most of all she enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout the years she would babysit them and see them off to school. She often would be found drinking coffee and smoking a cigarette at the kitchen table. At times, you might find her playing a good game of dice or solitaire on the computer. She will be dearly missed by many. 

 

Per her wishes, she will be cremated and no services will be held.

Rick Payne, 70, of Hoopeston

Rick Edwin Payne, 70, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 11:20 P.M. Friday October 9, 2020 at his home.  He was born June 28, 1950, in Danville, IL, the son of Isham “Ike” and Beulah (Smith) Payne.  He married Margarita (Lopez) Scharm on November 30, 1996 in Newtown, IL.  She survives in Hoopeston. 

 

He is also survived by one daughter, Lenae (Stacy) Luke of Oakwood, IL; two step-children, Steve (Debbie) Scharm of Huntley, IL and Kathy Scharm of Hoopeston, IL; one granddaughter, Harper Luke; 6 step-grandchildren, Danielle, Breanna, Randy, Clayton, Leif, and Steve; and four step-great-grandchildren, Ace, Sage, Ella, and Ashlyn. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

 

Rick started his career as a sales representative for Federal Cartridge Corp. and then moved to Alaska where he became an entrepreneur in 1970 in sales and a Class A Big Game hunting guide.  He later returned to Hoopeston and opened Alaska US Sports Marketing and consulted many companies in sales and marketing.  Rick was always inventing and thinking of new business ideas.  He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1534 in Anchorage, AK, the Hoopeston American Legion Post #384 and the Danville Rifle and Pistol Club.  His hobbies included hunting and fishing and he especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. 

 

Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded.  A visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Tuesday October 20, 2020 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL.  A graveside service will follow the visitation and will begin at 1:30 P.M. at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston, IL, with Steve Unger officiating.  We kindly ask that face coverings be worn and social distancing is maintained by those who attend the visitation and/or graveside service.

Anne Rhoades, 84, of Hoopeston

Anne M. Meyer Rhoades, 84, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 4:25 A.M. Saturday October 10, 2020 at the Gibson Area Hospital Annex in Gibson City, IL.  She was born December 21, 1935, in Milford, IL, the daughter of John F. and Minnie (Schaumburg) Tubbs.  She married Verlin Meyer and he preceded her in death.  She later married Gordon Rhoades and he also preceded her in death. 

She is survived by 5 nieces and nephews, Becky (Tom) Heinrich of Dwight, IL, Mike (Kebby) Knake of Hoopeston, IL, Don Knake of Jackson, TN, Mark (Marge) Rosenboom of Crescent City, IL, and Sue Medlen of Tucson, AZ and numerous great-nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lois Rosenboom and Mary Knake; and two nephews, David Knake and Dennis Knake. 

Anne began working as the secretary for Farmers Pioneer Insurance Company in 1962 and later became the manager.  She continued working there until her retirement in 1998.  She was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Crescent City but most recently attended the Hoopeston United Methodist Church.  She served as a volunteer at the Hoopeston Multi Agency and Iroquois County Historical Society and was a member of the DAR and Women Making a Difference.  She loved reading, traveling to Civil War sites, and collecting antiques. 

Per her wishes, she will be cremated.  A public visitation will be held 9:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. Saturday October 17, 2020 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL.  A private memorial service and burial will be held.

Artie "Peg" Wyss, 91, formerly of Cissna Park

Artie "Peg" Wyss, 91, formerly of Cissna Park, IL, passed away on Tuesday October 6, 2020, at the Alta Vista Senior Living Community in Prescott, AZ.  She was born October 12, 1928, in

 Hoopeston, IL, the daughter of Curtis and Ipha Brown.  She married Jacob "Jack" Wyss in Cissna Park, IL, in 1948 and he preceded her in death in 2000.  Peg also grieved the loss of a daughter, 

Janice Cunningham (Wyss) in 2002.

 She is survived by one daughter, Lana Sinn of Prescott, AZ; grandchildren, Andrew Sinn and Adam Sinn; and nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband and daughter Janice, she was 

preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret; and brothers, Curtis, Robert, Dale, Darrel, and Bill.

After graduating from Hoopeston high school, Peg worked various jobs and became a homemaker.  For many years she managed the lunch counter at the Livestock Sales Barn in Cissna Park bringing joy and delivering porkburgers, sodas, and hostess pies to countless folks with a joke ora smile.  She enjoyed spending time with her niece Lisa and friends at Parkview (5thStreet 

House).  Peg and Jack moved to The Villages, FL, for retirement.  Peg enjoyed 13 years of bowling, dancing, golfing, and making additional friends.  Sherelocated to Prescott, AZ to be closer to

 her daughter, Lana, during her final years.  Peg lived long enough to see her Chicago Cubbies win the WorldSeries.  What she appreciated the most was spending her time with friends and 

family being social.

Peg’s family would like to thank the caretaker and hospice staff at Alta Vista for the respectful, kind care that they helped the family provide Peg, especially those who were with her during her 

final time.  Specifically, thank you to Michelle, Amanda, and Judy for their loving care of Peg.

Hardin Thomas James Sr., 92, of Potomac

Hardin Thomas James Sr., 92, of Potomac, passed away October 5, 2020 at the Hawthorne Inn, in Danville IL.

 

Hardin was born in Thomasboro, Illinois, to Ormal and Chloe Pearl (Webster) James. He had four brothers and one sister, Marlou and Marylou (twins), Sherman, Eddie, and Lee. A brother, Ormal Jr., and 2 sisters, Fanny and Sarah, died in childhood.

 

In his youth, Hardin loved competitions of all kinds, but especially boxing and baseball. An oft mentioned highlight of his youth was competing in sports at Carthage College.

 

Hardin met Helen Holt as a sophomore at Armstrong High School and claims that he told her then that he was going to marry her. She was the love and focus of his life, and they married on June 5, 1949 at No. 10 Church of Christ in rural Potomac. They lived on the family farm near Potomac their entire married life, in the house they built, raising primarily grain, with some horses for Helen and Melody to pamper, and other livestock. They both played saxophone in their band the Dream Beats. In June 2019 they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary together.

 

Hardin was a member of No. 10 Church of Christ all of his adult life, serving on the church board for many years, and singing in the choir with Helen. He also served as President of the Armstrong School District school board, and many farm organizations. For 69 years, he was a 32nd degree mason and a member of Pleasant View Lodge (formerly Potomac Lodge), in Bismarck. He was a private pilot, owning an airplane and having a runway on the farm for years. He loved bowling, often competing on 2 leagues at a time. He proudly participated in The Singing Men of WGNN in proclaiming the glory of God.

 

Hardin is survived by three sons- Hardin “Tom” James, Jr. of Verona, Wisconsin, Richard A. James of Potomac, and Mark O. (Kathy) James of Austin, Texas; one daughter- Melody J. (Ron) Domanico of Atlanta, Georgia; nine grandchildren- Jason, LaTessa, Kristin, Eli, Josie, Michelle, Adam, Daniel, and Amy; nine great-grandchildren and one more on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Helen, his parents, five brothers, three sisters, and daughter-in-law Della.

 

A Celebration of Hardin’s Life will be held with an open visitation at Blurton Funeral Home, in Potomac, on Friday, October 9, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

 

With deep regrets from the family, due to current Covid-19 concerns and current health restrictions the funeral service will be private. All are welcome to join the family following the service at Partlow Cemetery, in Armstrong, Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.

Thelma Ann Webster, 87, of Houston, TX passed away on Monday, 10/05/2020 at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. 

 

A Funeral service is set for Monday, 10/12/2020 at 1:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Watseka, IL. Burial to follow at the Prairie Dell Cemetery in Iroquois. 

 

A visitation is set for 1 hour prior to the 1:00pm service on Monday.

Barbara L. Newell, 90, of Watseka

Barbara L. Newell, 90, of Watseka passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

 

Barbara was born on October 26, 1929 in Indianapolis, IN, the daughter of Elza and Lavina Mae (Killin) Longmire. She married Harold “Budd” Newell on June 26, 1949 in Otterbein, IN and was married for sixty-eight years until he preceded her in death on January 23, 2018. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son-in-law, Tom Trumble; and one sister, Gloria McGrath.

 

She is survived by two daughters, Debra Edmondson of Greensboro, NC and Cindy Trumble of Watseka; one sister, Helen Brown of Fairfield, OH; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; three brother in laws; two sister in laws; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Barbara was a member of First United Methodist Church in Watseka as well as the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed bingo, reading, dominos, and was an artist.

 

A memorial visitation will take place from 2:00-4:00 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. A private interment will take place at a later date at Iroquois Memorial Park.

Dennis Dave Wendel, 73, of Martinton

Dennis Dave Wendel, 73, of Martinton passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at North Logan Health Care Center in Danville. He was born May 9, 1947 in Litchfield, the son of Thomas and Virginia (Williams) Wendel and they preceded him in death in addition to two brothers, Paul and Tim Wendel; one sister, Cheryl Cordes; and one niece, Laura.

 

He married Agatha Mickle on February 16, 2001 in Watseka and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Tamara (Dustin) Honn of Herscher, Dawn Tull of Effingham and Elizabeth (Will) Martin of Murfreesboro, TN; three brothers, Robert (Dottie) Wendel of Mahomet, Larry (Karen) Wendel of Mercede, California, and Scott (Linda) Ellis of Naples, Florida; one sister, Marcia (Gary) Arseneau of Martinton; three grandchildren; and Aggie’s children, Kimberly McCullough of Ann Arbor, MI, Douglas McCullough of Chicago, Michelle (Cary) Sawyer of Bloomington, and Carla Jo (Corey) Kilgore and their three children of Watseka.

 

Mr. Wendel served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was a member of the Watseka American Legion Post #23. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears.

 

Cremation rites will be accorded by the Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka and burial will be at the Danville National Cemetery. Private military graveside rites will be provided by the Danville American Legion.

 

Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation or donor’s choice.

Reba J. Vangundy, 87, of Martinton

Reba J. Vangundy, 87 of Martinton passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at her home.

 

She was born on February 22, 1933 in Shelbyville, IN, the daughter of Roy and Elsie (Collins) Hembree.

 

She married Ralph R. Vangundy in Earl Park, IN on October 23, 1949 and he survives. She is also survived by three daughters, Brenda Newman (Jim Anderson) of Martinton, Kathy (Greg) Garrison of Lafayette, IN, and Beth (Rick) Vangundy of Dyer, IN; one son, Marty (Jeanne) Vangundy of Boyd, TX; two sisters, Mary Seavers of Milan, TN and Alice (Ira) Williamson of Watseka; eleven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and three sisters.

 

Mrs. Vangundy was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Papineau. She was a local artist and loved to paint. Reba was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 1:30 p.m. until the 3:00 p.m. funeral service at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Papineau. Rev. Craig Forwalter will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Papineau.

 

The family requests those attending the services to please wear a mask.
