ISP Release Update for Arrest for Criminal Damage to Vehicles – Interstate 74

On March 30th, the Illinois State Police was initially dispatched to two separate incidents in regard to driver side window damage.  At that time, the Illinois State Police began investigating the matter with suspicion that person or persons were intentionally targeting motor vehicles with the intent to cause harm or damage.
During the course of the next two months, the Illinois State Police followed up on multiple leads, conducted numerous interviews, and conducted multiple proactive enforcement operations in attempt to apprehend the person or persons responsible for these acts.  We take these acts of violence very seriously as they represent clear and present danger to the public and have the capacity to create serious injuries, crashes, and/or kill the innocent motoring public.
Throughout the course of the investigation, we were able to identify a suspect.  Armed with that information, on Friday, June 1, 2018, Illinois State Police conducted a covert operation resulting in a felony stop and arrest of Kevin L. Casey of Janesville, WI.  There are currently fourty-five damage to vehicle incidents being investigated at this time across Champaign, Vermilion, Piatt, and DeWitt Counties.  The investigation also includes multiple states to the east including Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia.
This investigation was truly like finding a needle in a haystack and the Illinois State Police is pleased to report this arrest due to its significance in ensuring public safety.

The success of this investigation was a joint effort involving numerous entities.  The Special Agents within Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigations, Patrol Troopers from the Illinois State Police District 6 and District 10 Headquarters, the Champaign and Vermillion County State’s Attorneys Offices, Champaign County Sheriff’s Department, Champaign Police Department, Urbana Police Department, Oakwood Police Department, and the many other entities within the Illinois State Police which assisted during the course of this investigation.
