Vermilion County States Attorney convicts Hoopeston Man

On December 3, 2018, the defendant pleaded guilty in two pending cases: 18 CF 332 and 18 CF 490 and received an agreed to sentence.

In 18 CF 332, the defendant pleaded guilty to Count 1, Methamphetamine Delivery (Class 1 Felony), and received a sentence of four (4) in the Illinois Department of Corrections. In that matter, on June 3, 2018, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Deputy Nicholson of the Vermilion Co. Sheriff's Department responded to the area of Artesian and S. Vermilion, Danville, for the report of a suspicious vehicle stopped at a stop sign. Upon arrival, the defendant was found to be asleep behind the wheel of the stopped, but running car. Ultimately, the defendant was searched, and he was found to be in possession of two baggies. One baggy contained 3.6 grams of methamphetamine and the other baggy contained 3.2 grams of methamphetamine. The defendant was also in possession of $1,150.00 USC.

The above four (4) year sentence is consecutive to the five (5) year sentence to the Illinois Department of Corrections the defendant received in 18 CF 490. in that matter, the defendant pleaded guilty to the sole count of Count 1, Bringing Contraband into a Penal Institution — Controlled Substance (Class 1 Felony). Regarding this charge, in July and August of 2018, Investigatory Bruens of the Vermilion Co. Sheriff's Department uncovered a scheme between the defendant and his girlfriend, Ashley Cornell (codefendant), whereby Cornell would send controlled substances to the defendant while he was incarcerated at the Vermilion Co. Jail on the 18 CF 332 matter. The scheme was uncovered through the monitoring of jail phone calls between the defendant and his girlfriend. Essentially, Cornell would send letters to the defendant at the jail, and those letters contained areas of dissolved methamphetamine. Cornell would note the area by writing something to the effect of "l love you." On August 1, 2018, the jail intercepted a letter from Cornell to the defendant containing a crossword puzzle, upon which was a yellowish stain and Connell's written words "XOXO, love you." The yellowish stain was tested and found to contain methamphetamine.

At the time of his plea, the defendant was on probation for two separate Possession of

Methamphetamine cases (both Class 2 Felonies) in 17 CF 165 and 17 CF 303. Both probations were revoked, convictions entered, and the cases were unsatisfactorily terminated.

The People also dismissed all charges in 18 CF 365 as part of the plea agreement. In that matter, the defendant was charged with offenses related to his getting into a fight with another inmate at the county jail.

local man who was found dead in his vehicle

Vermilion County officials are investigating the death of a local man who was found dead in his vehicle Monday night east of Rossville.

Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn said the sheriff's department got a call about a vehicle in a ditch on a rural road east of Rossville Monday night. When deputies arrived, they found the man deceased in the driver's seat.

He said no foul play is suspected, and the man didn't appear to have injuries from the vehicle going into the ditch. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death, said Hartshorn, who added that it appears from their investigation that the man had become confused, was on the wrong road and was trying to turn around when his vehicle went into the ditch.

He said the man was able to call his family, tell them where he was and ask them to come get him. While family members were en route, the driver of a passing vehicle saw the car in the ditch, called 911 and gave the exact location to the sheriff's department.

The Vermilion County coroner's office has not yet released the name of the man, pending notification of relatives.
