The body of a 27-year-old drowning victim has been pulled from the Vermilion River near Danville

The body of a 27-year-old drowning victim has been pulled from the Vermilion River near Danville.   Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden says the victim is Dustan J. Haase (Hays) of Westville.  Chief Vermilion County Sheriff’s Investigator Michael Hartshorn says Haase was one of three people who were kayaking Sunday evening when they ran into trouble at a log jam at about 6:30 p.m.

Captain Hartshorn says a male and female were rescued after they were able to get on top of a log jam.  But the 27-year-old went underwater and did not resurface.  Hartshorn says the victim’s body was recovered shortly before 7:30 this (Monday) morning.

Vermilion County Sheriff’s Deputies, Illinois State Conservation Officers, and firefighters and medical personnel were on the scene Sunday night for the search effort.  It was suspended overnight and then resumed early today and that is when Haase’s body was located.

The location where the drowning occurred is near where some work is being done on the Interstate 74 bridge over the river.

Balloons Over Vermilion Thanks the Community For the Successful Return of the 2021 Event

Organizers of Balloons Over Vermilion would like to thank the tens of thousands of guests who once again brought smiles, excitement and inspiration to the event after a year’s absence. “Even with the fickle weather faced on Saturday, we still hosted over 21,000 guests during our two-day event, and experienced record crowds on Friday,” stated Pat O’Shaughnessy, Co-Chair of the event. Grateful for the huge success of Friday’s response to BOV 2021 the event organizers offered free admission to Saturday’s event and activities. “Given what we saw on Friday, we felt that free admission and parking on Saturday was a great way to say thanks, and also encourage everyone to come out and enjoy all of the other attractions at the airport,” he added.

While Saturday’s weather may have preempted the balloon flight and glow, over 5000 visitors to Balloons Over Vermilion didn’t let that dampen their spirits. Balloon School hosted by local pilots gave a taste of the sport of ballooning with hands-on safety, pilot training, weather education and competition at demonstration stations. The carnival, food vendors, Kids Zone, Joyful Bubbles, Touch A Truck, the Amazing Giants stilt walkers, inflatables and live music in the beer tent satisfied pent-up demand for people to get out and experience local events and festivals again.

“Our sincere thanks once again go out to our Title Sponsor, the Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation, for the continued support which it has shared since the beginning of Balloons Over Vermilion. Julius was with us in spirit this year, and certainly will be each year we are privileged to present this gift to Vermilion County,” said Jim Anderson, Co-Chair of the event. “Our Board of Directors is very pleased with this year’s results, as it will provide us with funds to help local programs and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of our most precious resource; our young people,” he added.

Over 400 volunteers and dozens of sponsors were also critical to the successful return of this outstanding 2021 marquee outdoor festival. Friday evening set a record crowd with just under 16,000 kids of all ages enjoying everything Balloons Over Vermilion has to offer.

Near perfect weather conditions Friday evening allowed for a spectacular balloon flight of 30 colorful hot air balloons. In addition to the inspiring launch, the near perfect wind conditions suspended the graceful giants midair over the airport grounds and nearby for an extended viewing as the balloons decorated the skies. A spectacular balloon glow followed with the unique, interactive experience of

Balloonmeister Joe Vincent dropping the ropes and allowing the crowd up-close access to the balloons and pilots. “Our pilots share with us that this is one of the most knowledgeable and respectful crowds they see at any comparable event. They look forward to Balloons Over Vermilion all year long, and they’re pleased to bring the magic of hot air ballooning closer to our type of crowd,” he stated.

Mark your calendars now for Balloons Over Vermilion 2022 July 8th and 9th at the Vermilion Regional Airport and follow us on social media for the latest updates.

Upon detecting the release, MPL immediately shut down and isolated the pipeline and deployed resources and personnel to contain the release and initiate cleanup activities. The Iroquois County Public Health Department (ICPHD) is also working with MPL to have local private water supplies tested as a precaution and there have been no adverse issues identified. Gasoline has reached a field ditch, where it has been contained by several booms and is being removed. At this time, no gasoline has been observed in nearby Spring Creek. Environmental cleanup will continue for some time, during which all entities involved will continue to work together to restore the immediate area. The pipeline itself has been repaired. Woodland man charged with rape

A Woodland man who allegedly raped a co-worker in the back of a work truck is being held in the Champaign County Jail.

Isaiah R. Allen, 24, was charged Monday with aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse for acts he is alleged to have committed with a 16-year-old girl on June 10.

According to a Champaign County sheriff’s investigator’s report, the teen showed up at the Carle Hospital emergency room that evening, saying that she had been sexually assaulted by an older coworker with whom she was working as an assistant.

In the package delivery truck earlier that day, he allegedly asked her questions of a sexual nature, then talked her into getting in the back of the truck and performed different sex acts on her and with her while in the parking lot of a gas station in north Champaign.

The day after the alleged attack, Allen told police the sex was consensual and he thought the girl was 18.

She was interviewed by a trained professional at the Children’s Advocacy Center June 24 and gave details of the assault, including that she had told Allen she was 16, that she told him several times to stop because he was hurting her, and that Allen told her not to tell anyone about the encounter.

Interviewed a second time, Allen reportedly told the investigator he had sex with the girl and knew she was only 16.

Allen is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on Aug. 17. He’s being held in lieu of $350,000 bond.

If convicted of the most serious of the charges, Allen faces six to 30 years in prison.

accine Fact Information

Please feel free to share some of these sites with credible and factual information as we continue to have vaccine hesitancy and a lot of misinformation going around in the media, especially social media:

  1. The COVID19 vaccine did not rush or skip any steps during the testing and approval process:
    1. Vaccines can take a long time to be approved in normal circumstances because of limited funds and resources, limited disease to test against, etc.  With COVID19 and an ongoing pandemic, there was no limit to funding (that part is huge), multiple companies working together,  and plenty of disease for testing.  You need high infections rates to shorten the period of time to study for effectiveness and safety.
    2. While there have been some adverse reactions, those have been extremely rare.
    3. For more accurate information, please go to the CDC’s website:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/safety-of-vaccines.html
  2. mRNA Vaccines are too new and can change our DNA (MYTH)
    1. While they are new, they have been studying them and working with them for decades and no, they do not change your DNA.  See the facts here - https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/mrna.html
  3. Here is a site for some of the other common myths that are going around (sorry, you are not magnetic after you had your vaccine):  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html

School Update!!!

The CDC on Friday will recommend that fully vaccinated students, teachers and other staff don’t have to wear masks in school next year. The guidance still calls for unvaccinated attendees to mask up. The CDC also sticks with recommending its 3-feet distancing rule, testing and other mitigation measures, particularly in elementary schools where the students are too young to qualify for the vaccine. Reminder that CDC isn’t a regulatory agency so nothing in these recommendations is required. But CDC guidance has been a powerful influence on the decisions of districts, parents and teachers' unions. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/k-12-guidance.html?fbclid=IwAR1IHAZQfyFMcdDP6t7DxjJQ5-HI8upomkToE3TwTjNIdd4wjQCt1zEdYjY

As part of the new FY2022-27 Proposed Highway Improvement Program released in July, IDOT is investing nearly $21 billion to improve roads and bridges over the next six years, the second multi-year plan that reflects the impact of Rebuild Illinois.
